Nakuru’s history is closely tied to the Uganda Railway and Kenya’s colonial-era development. The town grew rapidly in the early 1900s as the railway expanded through the Rift Valley, turning Nakuru into an important transport and trading stop. Because of its location, it became a natural hub for settlers, businesses, and agricultural activity.

Before that, the area was part of the traditional lands of the Nandi, Maasai, and Kikuyu communities, among others, who used the region for grazing, settlement, and local trade. The name Nakuru is commonly associated with the local language and is often linked to ideas of “dusty place” or “place of dust,” reflecting the area’s environment.

During the colonial period, Nakuru developed into one of the major towns in the Rift Valley. It later became important for farming, especially large-scale agriculture, and for administration. After independence, it continued to grow into a major urban center and is now the capital of Nakuru County.

Nairobi started as a railway depot in 1899 when the British were building the Uganda Railway from Mombasa toward Lake Victoria. It was chosen because of its central location and relatively flat land, which made it useful as a supply and maintenance stop.

At first, it was not a major city at all — just a swampy railway camp with storage facilities, workers, and administrative buildings. But the railway brought more people, trade, and government activity, so the settlement grew quickly.

In 1900, Nairobi was officially established as a township, and in 1905 it replaced Mombasa as the capital of the British East Africa Protectorate. After that, it developed rapidly into Kenya’s main political and economic center.
