Mombasa Press Club Condemns Hacking of Journalist Karim Rajan’s WhatsApp Account, Calls for Swift Justice
Mombasa, Kenya – The Mombasa Press Club strongly condemns the recent cyberattack targeting veteran journalist Karim Rajan, whose WhatsApp account was unlawfully accessed and used to send fraudulent messages to his contacts soliciting money.
The incident, which has caused distress among colleagues, friends, and members of the public, highlights the growing threat of cybercrime and the misuse of digital platforms to exploit trust and harm reputations.
Speaking on behalf of the Mombasa Press Club, Chairman Omar Abdallah confirmed that a suspect linked to the hacking incident has since been arrested, marking a significant step towards accountability.
“We welcome the swift action by security agencies in apprehending the suspect behind the hacking of Karim Rajan’s WhatsApp account. This criminal act not only targeted an individual journalist but also undermined public trust and the integrity of digital communication platforms,” said Abdallah.
He further urged law enforcement agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution of the suspect to serve as a deterrent to others engaging in similar cybercrimes.
“Journalists and media practitioners are increasingly becoming targets of cyberattacks, and this incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced digital security awareness and protection mechanisms. We call on authorities to treat such cases with the seriousness they deserve,” he added.
The Press Club also advised members of the public to remain vigilant when receiving unusual financial requests through messaging platforms, even from known contacts, and to verify such communications through alternative means.
Karim Rajan has since regained control of his account, and efforts are ongoing to strengthen security measures to prevent future breaches.
The Mombasa Press Club stands in solidarity with Mr. Rajan and reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the welfare and professional integrity of journalists in the region.
