Western Nyota Salaams Club Members Empowered on Cyber Security and Mental Health Awareness
Busia, July 30, 2025 —
Members of the Western Nyota Salaams Club today gathered for a crucial training session focused on Cyber Security and Mental Health Awareness, a timely and much-needed initiative aimed at empowering local business owners and community groups with knowledge to navigate the digital world safely and address growing mental health concerns.
The training, held in Busia, was organized by DHAMIRAMOJA Community-Based Organization (CBO) under the leadership of its Director Sarah Martha. The session was facilitated by Eunita, a mental health and cyber safety expert, who took participants through interactive discussions and practical strategies on digital protection and emotional wellness.
With the rise in online fraud, social media threats, and digital scams, Salaams Club members—who include small business owners and leaders of community savings groups (chamas)—were taught how to recognize cyber threats, protect their data, and create safe online environments for their businesses and families.
Beyond the digital sphere, the training also delved into the importance of mental health awareness, especially within grassroots communities. Participants were encouraged to normalize conversations around emotional wellbeing and support one another through mental health struggles.
A key highlight of the session was a passionate appeal to men in the community to speak out and seek help when faced with Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV)—an issue that remains largely unspoken among male victims due to stigma and societal expectations. The facilitators emphasized that vulnerability is not a weakness, and that healing begins with open conversations and community support.
Speaking at the event, DHAMIRA MOJA Director Sarah Martha stated:
“Our goal is to build resilient communities, not just economically, but also mentally and emotionally. We must ensure that as we grow our businesses and chamas, we’re also protecting our minds and our digital spaces.”
The event concluded with a commitment by the Salaams Club members to carry the message back to their networks, raise awareness, and become champions of both cyber safety and mental health support in their circles.
This initiative marks yet another milestone in DHAMIRA MOJA’s ongoing work to empower local communities through information, advocacy, and grassroots mobilization.
