The 84-km Kenol–Sagana–Marua road running from Kenol in Murang’a County through Makutano and Sagana to Marua in Nyeri County is being upgraded.
As part of the Northern Corridor and the Trans-Africa Highway, the road modernises a vital trunk route to strengthen Nairobi’s connections with the greater Mt. Kenya region and the wider East African market.
The project is being implemented in two main lots and includes expansion to a dual carriageway, construction of bridges, grade separated interchanges and freight-friendly junctions. As part of the new development, a feeder-road component has been planned and will lead to the upgrading of local access routes, market ramps and lay-bys. This will ensure the seamless last mile connectivity between farms, markets and the highway.
Beyond easing congestion, the project is already creating jobs and benefiting small businesses along the corridor. Once complete, it will reduce travel times, lower vehicle operating costs, improve safety, and expand market access for farmers and traders in Murang’a, Kirinyaga and Nyeri, unlocking fresh economic opportunities and driving growth across Central Kenya.
