The 84-km Kenol–Sagana–Marua road running from Kenol in Murang’a County through Makutano and Sagana to Marua in Nyeri County is being upgraded.

As part of the Northern Corridor and the Trans-Africa Highway, the road modernises a vital trunk route to strengthen Nairobi’s connections with the greater Mt. Kenya region and the wider East African market.

The project is being implemented in two main lots and includes expansion to a dual carriageway, construction of bridges, grade separated interchanges and freight-friendly junctions. As part of the new development, a feeder-road component has been planned and will lead to the upgrading of local access routes, market ramps and lay-bys. This will ensure the seamless last mile connectivity between farms, markets and the highway.

Beyond easing congestion, the project is already creating jobs and benefiting small businesses along the corridor. Once complete, it will reduce travel times, lower vehicle operating costs, improve safety, and expand market access for farmers and traders in Murang’a, Kirinyaga and Nyeri, unlocking fresh economic opportunities and driving growth across Central Kenya.

HISTORY
Gerald Gikonyo Kanyuira, the first African to own a car in Kenya. His first salary was 4 bob a month.
Very little is known about Gerald Gikonyo Kanyuira but he’s a man with a rich history.
He is the first African Kenyan to own a car. An Austin which he co-bought with a friend for a whopping 300 bob; quite a fortune back then. His first job was at Mathari Catholic coffee plantation where he used to work as a casual labourer where his take home salary was Ksh 4 per month.
He had an entrepreneurial mind so he used to invest the money in goats which he later sold and relocated to Nairobi to look for better pastures in the late 1920’s.There he secured another job with Kenya Planters Co-operative Union where his salary was 20 bob and it has been nothing but an upward trajectory for the man.
Gerald Gikonyo Kanyuira is a fully fledged business man with various investments in Real Estate, agriculture and hospitality.Today, the value of the property owned by the Rwathia businessmen in Nairobi, Thika, Murang’a and other towns runs into billions of shillings, and their billionaire sons and mentees control substantial wealth at the Nairobi Securities Market. The famous Sabina Joy is one of his property.
