There was a time when an elected MP and another leader, both of whom had previously worked with Kasongo, aligned themselves with Dr. Fred Matiang’i when he entered politics. I had the privilege of being in a meeting where these two leaders advised Dr. Matiang’i on how to build political relevance
They told Matiang'i that if he wanted to be seen as a serious national political figure, he should hire buses, ferry youths from different parts of the country to his functions and create the impression that he had massive support. They even suggested that some youths could occasionally attack his vehicles and blame the government so that he could gain sympathy. They also encouraged him to popularise the slogan “FOM ni Form.”
At the time, I thought some of their advice was politically clever. But when Dr. Matiang’i took his turn to speak, I realised there is a huge difference between a politician and a true leader
He told them clearly:“I will never pay or ferry youths across the country just to fill my events or create an impression that I have a huge following. I was not raised that way.”
He explained that if he went to Meru, Embu, Busia or any other part of Kenya and found only ten genuine residents waiting for him, those were the people he would address proudly. Those are the people who understand the problems of their communities since they live there
Matiang'i asked them simple question: How can:someone from Kisii be ferried to Busia to create a crowd, yet that person may not even understand the problems facing the people of Busia, honestly this is how you want us to work?
He then challenged those leaders, instead of advising me to use young people for political theatre, why not ask how we can help those young people find jobs, become productive and improve their lives,? You have an opportunity to make policies in Parliament and that's your work
Matiang'i added exploiting youth unemployment for political gain is not leadership. Dr. Fred Matiang’i
