During his 1324 pilgrimage to Cairo, Mansa Musa, ruler of the Mali Empire, shared a story with the historian al-Umari concerning his predecessor. According to this account, the previous king was obsessed with the Atlantic Ocean and the limits of the world. He eventually abdicated his throne, launching an expedition of two thousand ships into the sea to discover what lay beyond the horizon.
The report states that only one ship returned to the coast. The captain claimed his vessel had been caught in a violent river within the ocean that pulled it away from the fleet. After the king learned of this, he departed with a massive second expedition of his own, and none of these ships were ever seen again.
Historians analyze this account as a primary source documenting the immense logistical and naval reach of the Mali Empire in the fourteenth century. While stories of transoceanic arrival in the Americas remain a subject of intense debate, the documented ambition of the Malian state reflects a period of global exploration that preceded later European efforts. The narrative highlights the strategic and intellectual curiosity that defined West African leadership during this era.
What does this account reveal to you about the scope of Malian power during the fourteenth century?

Caroline Wanga: Kenyan CEO Of US Magazine With Over A Million Readership And Her Journey To Being One Of America’s Most Successful Black Women

Essence is a popular American monthly lifestyle magazine covering fashion, culture, beauty and entertainment. Established in 1970 with a focus on African-American women, it commands a monthly readership of over a million people. In this article, WoK brings you the story of Essence magazine CEO Caroline Wanga.

Background

Caroline A. Wanga was born in 1979 in Kisumu County. She grew up within the vicinity of Kenyatta University since her parents – Dr. Pamela Obondi Wanga and Dr. Lucas Wanga were professors at the institution. She attended Kenyatta University primary school before relocating to the United States with her mother in 1988. At the time, her father was pursuing a doctorate degree in educational psychology at the University of Minnesota. She attended Texas College but dropped out after she got pregnant, at the age of 17, with her daughter Cadence.

“After that happened, I became indignant that this wasn’t going to end my plan to success,” she told CNBC.

“The barrier to the degree was not the program……… “It was my life. I had this little girl and I was not going to ask for help because I’m going to prove I could do this on my own”, Wanga told the same publication.

Still thirsting for an education, she went on to enrol at Texas University in 2003 at the age of 25.

Career Journey

In June 2004, Caroline Wanga worked as a bookstore manager at Texas College, a position she held for eleven months. Thereafter she joined Target – a distribution company where she worked her way up the corporate ladder over a 15 year period. From June 2005 to August 2005 she served as Warehouse Operations intern before getting promoted to be the Outbound Operations Manager. In October 2006, she became the Project Manager, Distribution Planning and Engineering, Food Distribution Operations for 2 years and 8 months.

In June 2009, she was once again promoted to become the human resource manager, real estate, construction and store planning, a position she held for 1 year and 7 months. In January 2011, she became the Human Resource Manager, Business Intelligence and Analytics and a year later she was appointed as Group Manager, Human Resources. In August 2013 she became the Senior Group Manager, Human Resources before becoming a Director, Diversity & Inclusion a year later.

Joining Essence

She finally called it a day at Target and joined Essence Ventures in June 2020 as Chief Growth Officer for one month before being named as the interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Caroline confirmed CEO of Essence Communications Inc in February 2021 which is the parent company of the Essence magazine. Essence is an independent black-owned consumer technology company focused on merging content, community and commerce to meet the evolving cultural and lifestyle needs of black Americans.

Caroline will work with team leads across the organization and run the day-to-day operations as well as oversee the independent review system,” read a statement from the company.

“I could not be more excited for the opportunity to lead this cornerstone of black culture into its next phase of growth, innovation and impact alongside this incredible team of national and global reckoning on the systemic injustices that we face as black women and as a black community,” Caroline said in her acceptance speech.

Apart from leading Essence, Caroline is the founder of WangaWomanLLC – an organization that seeks to empower individuals and organizations to strategize how purpose feeds career, workplace and interpersonal relationships.

AFRICAN HISTORIA:

From the archives: Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of Kenya, pictured with Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia during a defining period of post-independence African leadership.

The two leaders were among the most influential African statesmen of their era, playing major roles in advancing Pan-Africanism, African diplomacy and liberation movements across the continent.

Haile Selassie also played a central role in the formation of the Organisation of African Unity in Addis Ababa in 1963, alongside leaders such as Kenyatta, at a time when many African countries were emerging from colonial rule.

Peter Magana Kenyatta is a figure of significant historical interest, serving as a unique link between Kenya’s founding history and Britain. Born on August 11, 1943, in West Sussex, UK, he is the son of Kenya’s first president, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, and his second wife, Edna Grace Clarke, a British schoolteacher.
Unlike his high-profile half-siblings, such as former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Peter Magana has led a quiet, private life. He spent the majority of his professional career in London, working as a dedicated broadcaster and producer for the BBC. His life remains largely shielded from the political spotlight.
Despite his low profile, Peter has made rare, meaningful visits to Kenya for major milestones, including the 1963 Independence celebrations, his father’s funeral in 1978, and Uhuru Kenyatta’s inauguration in 2013. In recent years, there have been suggestions that he has moved to Kenya to enjoy a peaceful retirement. As the only child of Jomo Kenyatta’s marriage to Edna Clarke, Peter Magana represents a personal and cross-cultural dimension of the Kenyatta family legacy, remaining a respected, albeit private, member of the lineage.

AFRICAN HISTORIA

Have you ever wondered how our country got the name “Kenya,” and how our first president came to be named “Kenyatta”?

The name Kenya comes from Mount Kenya, the country’s tallest mountain.
Here’s how it happened...

The local Kikuyu people called the mountain “Kirinyaga”, meaning “place of brightness” or “mountain of whiteness” (because of its snow-capped peak).

The Embu people called it “Kirenyaa”, and the Kamba called it “Kiinyaa.”

When European explorers and missionaries arrived in the 1800s, they had difficulty pronouncing these names, they used to call it "Kenia"

They adapted the word into “Kenya”, which became the commonly used name for the mountain.

Later, when the country gained independence in 1963, it was named after Mount Kenya.

Our 1st president's name,"Kenyatta" did not come from Kenya, the name comes from the Maasai word “Kinyata”, referring to a decorative belt or beaded ornament he used to wear.

Early Europeans who interacted with him pronounced it as “Kenyatta,” and the name stuck.
