For many, Kifo Kisimani was first encountered as a set book. It was read aloud in class, underlined in biro, questioned in exams, then tucked away as school years moved on.
The story, however, stayed behind. Its questions about truth, fear, silence, and responsibility continue to linger, especially now.
This weekend, stages the full production of _Kifo Kisimani_, authored by Prof. Kithaka wa Mberia and directed by . The team brings their own memories of the text into rehearsal, returning to it not as students but as performers, and opening it up to a wider public.

Yesterday we hosted the debut of Sauti Sessions, a civic dialogue series curated by award-winning journalist, documentary storyteller and Baraza member, , to build a platform where stories meet power, and where young voices shape Kenya’s civic future.
Baraza exists to support and collaborate with our members to create the spaces, conversations, and platforms they envision.
Sauti Sessions is one of them. A gathering built on storytelling, open dialogue, and shared experience. Against the backdrop of music, visual art, comedy, and a moving documentary screening, we had conversations about justice, accountability, and the civic responsibility we all share.

Long before we opened our doors, we paused to listen and learn about Kenya’s media field in a research program that helped shape who we became.
Today, we’re building on that journey in a new study that explores how recent civic movements like the femicide march, the June 2024 protests, and Gen Z–led actions, are shaping digital creators and their audiences.
We’re reflecting on changes in creators’ income, audience engagement, mental well-being, new content strategies, and shifts in personal values. We’d love your voice in this conversation. Take our short survey (link in bio) and help us create research that matters to our community.

Kenya’s information space has been flooded with tactics meant to silence, mislead and divide.

Our new Misinformation Sentiment & Trend Analysis documents how these campaigns operate. Hashtags were deployed to frame protests as chaos and discredit critics, while bots and fake accounts harassed journalists and activists in synchrony. Deepfake videos of well-known figures circulated to confuse audiences, and fear tactics including death warnings and abduction rumours, aimed to keep people away.

We also observed coordinated and amplified hashtags opposing the Kenyan government. A question that remains is whether these are fully organic or part of another layer of manipulation.

Even so, youth-led movements continued to mobilise and document events with persistence and creativity under pressure.

Today, Baraza Media Lab joined members of the Kenya Media Sector Working Group in issuing a joint statement against the Communications Authority’s directive to suspend live coverage of the ongoing protests.
This move violates the Consitution, undermines court orders, and threatens the independence of Kenyan media.

We stand by the call for media houses to continue their programming, without interference- in full recognition of the editorial independence and constitutional mandate.
