Western Jazz Band 🎶🇹🇿

From the golden era of East African dance music, Western Jazz Band emerged in Dar es Salaam in 1959, founded by Iddi Nhende. Before forming the band, Nhende had played trumpet with Rufiji Jazz Band—an experience that helped shape his musical journey.

Western Jazz became known for its distinctive Saboso style, blending Tanzanian dance rhythms with strong Congolese rumba influences. Among musicians associated with the band were guitarists Hausi Dibonde, Wema Abdallah, Shamba Abdallah and Rashid Hanzuruni.

Their guitar-driven sound influenced the development of Tanzanian muziki wa dansi and helped carry East African dance music into a new era.

🎸 SALADIN — FROM BANGUI TO THE HEART OF SOUKOUS

Born Philippe Ferreira in Bangui in 1958, Saladin came from a musical family. His elder brother, George Ferreira, was a founding member of the legendary Makembe, one of the Central African Republic's influential groups.

Philippe began with Orchestre Zakela around 1970–71 before joining Makembe. In 1974, he composed “Josée Prêtée,” later recorded by Soki Vangu with Bella Bella.

In 1988, he moved to Paris for studies and joined Bizzgo Stars as lead guitarist. By 1992, he was part of the star-studded Soukous Stars, alongside musicians such as Lokassa Ya Mbongo, Dally Kimoko and Néné Tchakou.

His guitar became especially prominent during the Soukous Stars era, including on Morenita. His composition “Aba Guimo,” performed by Yondo Sister, also became one of his signature contributions.

Saladin's career went far beyond Soukous Stars. He became a sought-after session guitarist, arranger and producer, contributing to projects associated with Aurlus Mabele, Yondo Sister, Alain Kounkou, Koffi Olomidé, Petit Pays and Bisso na Bisso, among others.

From Bangui to Paris, Saladin established himself not simply as a guitarist, but as one of the musicians who helped shape the Soukous sound of an era.
