Do you need permission to do a cover song?

Last weekend, I found myself trapped in the middle of a very passionate debate between Mugithi artist Munju and his perpetually chilled guitarist Wanjohi.

The topic?
"Do you need permission to drop a fire cover song, or can we just… vibe?”

Munju, sipping chai like a philosopher king: “Wanjohi, my guy! If I can turn ‘Shape of You’ into a mugithi banger for Auntie Jane’s wedding, copyright is a myth. Just add a kayamba and call it ‘cultural exchange.’”

Wanjohi (strumming nervously): “Bro, last time you ‘exchanged culture,’ you turned Beyoncé’s ‘Halo’ into a kikuyu mugithi vibe.The YouTube demonetization gods are still angry. We need legal vibes.”

Cue chaos.
Munju’s solution: “Let’s release the cover under my goat’s name, Msupuu.
Wanjohi’: “Your goat owes me 500 bob for trampling my amp. We’re not taking legal advice from livestock.”

After 2 hours, 3 cups of chai, and one dramatic threat to consult “that one lawyer cousin who charges advice in chapati,” I intervened.

The (Actual) Tea ☕:

Yes, you need permission… but not from the artist! It’s called a mechanical license (no, not for cars 🚗).

No, you can’t dodge it by renaming the song “Wanjohi’s Broken String Lament” or blaming the goat.

The duo’s final compromise? “Fine, we’ll do it legally… but the cover art will be Msupuu in sunglasses.” 🐐🕶️
