BREAKING NEWS: BIG WIN for President Ruto as Trump Administration Pledges Over KSh 200 Billion to Kenya (BUT THERE IS A CATCH)
President William Ruto has scored a major diplomatic victory after securing a massive deal with the United States government that will see billions of shillings pumped into Kenya’s health sector.
In a landmark agreement signed on Thursday, the US government pledged over $1.6 billion (approx. KSh 207 Billion) to support Kenya’s healthcare system over the next five years.
The deal marks the first major agreement under President Donald Trump’s new "America First Global Health Strategy," signaling a drastic shift in how Washington handles foreign aid.
The agreement was signed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Ruto. However, the billions come with tough conditions. Under the new deal, Kenya must stop relying entirely on donors and pledged to increase its own health spending by $850 million over the same period.
End of the Road for NGOs?
In a shocking twist that will send panic through the civil society sector, Secretary Rubio announced that the US is officially cutting off the "NGO industrial complex."
Rubio stated that the US will no longer funnel money through Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), which he accused of eating up funds meant for patients. instead, the money will go directly to the Kenyan government.
"We’re not doing this anymore," Rubio declared during the signing, signaling that the Ruto administration will now take direct charge of funds and health workers previously paid by American aid.
This move follows the controversial dismantling of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) earlier this year.
Ruto Promises Accountability
With the money now flowing directly to the Treasury, President Ruto moved quickly to assure the US delegation that the funds would not be looted.
"I assure you that every shilling and every dollar will be spent efficiently, effectively, and accountably," Ruto vowed.
The deal also stipulates that faith-based hospitals (mission hospitals) must now be treated the same as private hospitals regarding government reimbursements.
The Haiti Connection
It wasn’t just about health. Rubio thanked Kenya for leading the gang suppression mission in Haiti, urging other nations to step up. President Ruto echoed the sentiments, praising the new US health model while acknowledging past American support that saved millions of Kenyan lives.
This deal replaces the previous funding model where the US gave Kenya $440 million in 2024, mostly for HIV/AIDS, before the new administration slashed foreign aid.
