Jamiro Broadcast Commissions Kenya First Business News Channel -Metropol Television in Kenya Capital City, Nairobi.
Business Information and Credit Management Company Metropol Corporation has launched Metropol TV, the first Kenyan 24-hour business news channel with a programming mix spanning news, features, talk shows and incisive analysis of business trends and investment opportunities across the country and East Africa.
Jamiro Broadcast, was commissioned to design and construct the new broadcast facility from the concept, project planning, installation and commissioning which many contenders could not deliver. A review of both IT and broadcast technologies was undertaken to realise a complete IP-based production workflow.
Different brands from various broadcast equipment manufacturers were deployed on the workflow to achieve the results needed in bringing up a modern, scalable and flexible business news channel. The project inception phase involved designing a 3000 Square feet open floor plan on 15th floor of a commercial town building into a complete broadcast facility including: News Studio, News Room Centre, MCR, Edit Suites and Voice Over Booth.
The project was delivered in 2 months with the following components:
CINEGY Air Pro Server as the main playout and automation at the MCR with 4 remote clients for Playlist control, Playlist editor, Titler and CG Overlay. Cinegy Air PRO offered unparalleled flexibility by playing mixed format and mixed resolution content, as well as un-rendered edit sequences straight to air.
LAWO 12-fader Crystal with Core engine for all the audio mixing requirements. The core Engine connected the studio microphones and Voice over booth Mic with Analog Mic cards whilst the expansion slots on the engine was fitted with 8 Analog line in / 8 Analog line out for all the video sources De-Embedding.
DATAVIDEO SE2850 Video Switcher at the PCR with a full-HD resolution (1920x1080) from the studio cameras, Playout and Router feeds.
JVC GY-HM890U ProHD Compact Shoulder Mount Camera with 1/3” Fujinon 20x Lens for studio video production with RM-LP25U Local Remote Panel which the Directors used for automatic and manual white balance.
WASP 3D Business Broadcast Graphics which helped the users to create and playout graphics that respond to real-time data updates & live feeds from third-party business data providers and multiple wire-feeds as well as social media feeds.
A Turnkey OB Kit equipped with a Portable Hard-cased HS-2200 Switcher, 5 Sony PXW X-70 Compact XDCAM Camcorders, Presonus Studio Live Digital Console for the wireless and wired microphones, BMD Hyperdeck Studio for recording uncompressed video with 4:2:2 color sampling at 10-bit and Canford Cable drums for Video and Audio connections.
The MCR was built on a complete IP architecture using Jamiro Broadcast MCRPack Innovation design. The solution is built on a highly customized, assembled hardware server with the ability to convert SD or HD SDI streams into broadcast-quality, SMPTE-compliant RTP/UDP streams or vice versa. CINEGY made this possible by providing the back-end application software.This made it ideal for their broadcast operations that received a large number of external business channel feeds in baseband SD/HD-SDI. Incoming SD and HD RTP streams from satellites, playout devices and network sources were registered in a server and distributed across the facility on a Gigabit switch for real time monitoring on Multiviewer, Live video switching and Ingest.
Our MCRPack Innovation is capable of Capturing two hundred or more streams, managed and routed simultaneously. Individual streams can be accessed from any point in the network, without generation loss. By Virtualization, we substantially reduce the individual hardware components in the MCR by running multiple instances of your broadcasting tools inside virtual machines, eliminating the worry (and expense) of redundant systems once and for all.
The signal from the MCR was Encoded and compressed in Standard Definition using the DME-8624S Encoder which provided a Multicast UDP/IP transport stream for the Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestial, Head-End contribution on a leased optical fiber line and Online Video Streaming to YouTube from a Gigabit switch which enabled stream monitoring throughout the broadcast facility. The MCRPack registry provided a parallel UDP/IP transport stream for back-up program which can be used a secondary and backup contribution feed to the head-end. Metropol TV signal was then distributed across the country on SIGNET DTT platform and can be accessed using any free-to-air DVB-T2 Compliant Decoder or any television with internal “Digital Tuner”
“MCRPack is the first all-IP Virtualized MCR solution innovated by Jamiro Broadcast, and as such it represents the successful realization of an ambitious vision encompassing SDI-IP migration,” says Benson Nyaga, CEO of Jamiro Broadcast Ltd. Metropol TV wanted all-IP infrastructure which will be used in the 2nd phase of expansion by connecting other studios, to the central matrix of the MCRPack.
