In July 2019, Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga, who was the then Homa Bay Woman Representative, announced that she had been diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer. She disclosed that the diagnosis occurred five years prior (2014)
The governor has opened up about her cancer journey, saying her mind kept her going.
"People, all my family members were crying, but I wasn't crying. Senator Beth Mugo told me that it is your mind that is going to kill you. It is not the cancer. I said all I am going to do is thank God. At that time, I was in Parliament. I had just been elected. I said, let me thank God because what if I did not have the opportunity to get treatment in the same way I had as a Member of Parliament. All I did was thank God, and in thanksgiving, 12 years later, I am here. I haven't gone anywhere."
"This is personal to me. In Homa Bay County, we are going to have every facility possible for diagnosing and treating cancer. We are not going to go anywhere; it is people who are going to come here to get treatment," Governor Wanga promised.
