BREAKING TRADITIONS: NANDI WOMEN CLAIM ECONOMIC POWER THROUGH LIVESTOCK (DAIRY COWS )OWNERSHIP .

In many communities across Africa, women are not allowed to own property such as dairy cows—an issue that contributes to economic poverty within those communities. One such community is the Nandi in Kenya’s Rift Valley region, where livestock ownership is traditionally reserved for men only.
However, through awareness efforts by community-based organizations, the French Development Agency, and the county government of Nandi, women are now beginning to be given the opportunity by their husbands to own dairy cows. They are able to sell the milk to processing factories and earn money to improve their livelihoods. Additionally, these women can now open bank accounts, enabling them to manage their own finances and boost the local economy.

Multitouch International (MTI), co-founded in 2003 by environmental conservationist Christine Wangari, has been spearheading the "One Million Youth Jobs Annually Initiative" since 2006. The initiative was born out of a desire to address national crises such as climate change, deforestation, river degradation, and youth unemployment. Inspired by the late Professor Wangari Maathai, MTI established mega tree nurseries that raised over 3 million indigenous, exotic, medicinal, and fruit tree seedlings distributed across Nakuru, Nairobi, and other areas. The organization now envisions a larger goal of planting 40 billion trees, aiming to transform Kenya’s economy through carbon trading, improve water security, and create millions of sustainable jobs for youth and women.

MTI emphasizes that tackling climate change and unemployment requires urgent, collective action, citing Kenya's vulnerability despite its low carbon emissions. The initiative plans to employ youths in tree planting, agroforestry, and sustainable farming activities, with salaries ranging from Ksh. 10,000 to 18,000 depending on roles and qualifications. MTI calls on the government, development partners, and citizens for support through land access, equipment donations, and financial contributions, promising transparency and accountability. With land already donated in Nakuru, Tana River, and Kilifi, MTI believes this project will not only restore the environment but also counter challenges like poverty, migration, and food insecurity, driving Kenya toward a more resilient future.
