Listen carefully: How to tame your advice monster

It lurks within, emerging in conversation to share ineffective, premature suggestions … it’s your advice monster, and we all have one, says writer and teacher Michael Bungay Stanier. He shares how giving advice can easily go astray, from solving the wrong problem to disempowering the very person...

I had the opportunity to speak about Personal Branding to the University of the People African Academic Network community, a topic that is increasingly relevant in professional and personal growth. As I prepared for this session, I realized how often we focus on building technical skills but overlook the importance of how we present ourselves to the world.

Personal branding is about being intentional with our image, values, and voice, crafting a consistent story that communicates who we are and what we stand for.

During my presentation, I emphasized that personal branding is not about self-promotion or perfection; it is about authenticity and clarity. We examined how our values, actions, and online presence influence how others perceive us. I encouraged my peers to think about the question: “What do you want to be known for?” The discussion that followed was vibrant and insightful, as many shared their experiences and challenges in building a professional identity. The positive feedback I received affirmed that this is a conversation worth continuing, one that helps us align our ambitions with how we show up in academic, professional, and digital spaces.

Reflecting on today’s experience, I am grateful for the chance to inspire others while learning with them. Personal branding is an ongoing journey of growth and self-awareness. As I continue to explore this topic, I hope to encourage more students to take ownership of their stories, project their strengths confidently, and build brands that reflect their true potential.

You build resilience by becoming better at coping with difficult emotions.

Is there mother of economics?
Artificial intelligence risks reinforcing entrenched patterns of gender exclusion that have persisted for centuries. Despite progress in many fields, women’s contributions remain systematically overlooked, from their historical marginalization in educational settings to their underrepresentation in the development and training of algorithms.

This dynamic raises concerns that AI may replicate and even intensify existing inequalities rather than disrupt them.

Without intervention, AI will reinforce centuries of gender exclusion; from classrooms to algorithms, women’s contributions remain overlooked.
