FAO Warns Strait of Hormuz Crisis Could Trigger Global Food Inflation and Supply Shock
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has issued an urgent warning over disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, cautioning that delays in shipping critical agricultural inputs could spark a sharp rise in global food prices. With up to 45% of essential agrifood inputs passing through the route, any prolonged standoff risks triggering supply shortages that could ripple across global markets, echoing the economic fallout seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.
FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero emphasized that the “clock is ticking,” as disruptions threaten timely access to fertilizers and energy inputs vital for crop production. If farmers are forced to plant with limited resources, the result could be lower yields, rising food inflation, and slower economic growth worldwide. Experts warn that without swift diplomatic action and coordinated trade policies, the current input crisis could escalate into a full-scale global food catastrophe.
