Wajir Marks International Deaf Awareness Day, Calls for Greater Inclusion
Wajir County today marked the International Deaf Awareness Day with a procession and celebrations held at the ICT Hall. The event was attended by members of the deaf community, county stakeholders, the Director of Disability Services in Kenya, and other senior officials.
Participants began the day with a symbolic walk from the Municipality Offices to the ICT Hall, carrying banners that emphasized this year’s theme: “No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights.”
Speaking at the event, the Municipality Chairman pledged his office’s support to the deaf community in Wajir, with particular focus on empowering university graduates and students in schools for the deaf.
Despite the progress, speakers noted that the deaf community in Wajir continues to face major challenges, including limited access to sign language interpreters, social stigma, and lack of employment opportunities. These barriers, they said, make it difficult for deaf persons to fully participate in education, governance, and economic activities.
The event served as both a celebration of achievements and a reminder of the work still needed to ensure that the rights of persons with hearing impairments are respected and upheld.
