"Justice cannot be selective."

The Coalition of Victims & Survivors Against State Violence has moved to court, challenging what it calls the selective compensation of victims of human rights violations.

The coalition says victims of abductions, enforced disappearances, and torture who were verified by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) have been left out of the government's compensation exercise despite being officially recognized.

They are now calling for transparency, equal treatment, and the full implementation of the reparations framework without discrimination.

"Justice delayed should never become justice denied."

Following the court's conviction of former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, Ruth from the Women Collective says the ruling is a significant victory for survivors, human rights defenders, and everyone who has stood firm in the fight for accountability.

She recalled the difficult journey to justice, including the alleged threats and intimidation that some human rights defenders faced while demanding accountability. Despite those challenges, they refused to be silenced.

As the country now awaits sentencing, Ruth says the verdict sends a powerful message: no one is above the law, and the voices of survivors deserve to be heard.
