The smells you suddenly can’t stand, the naps that never nap, the “is that a kick or a tummy rumble?” moments. There are clinic queues, names for the baby that keep changing, the spreadsheet of costs, the auntie advice you didn’t ask for, the baby’s father clueless.
There are long nights of worry; Google tabs open like windows in a storm, craving for ice cream in the middle of the night. Or stones.
Then the clock starts. Water breaks. Contractions. Bags get thrown into a car. Someone forgets the charger. Time stretches. Screams in the labour ward. Curse words are hurled. Regrets.
“Sitarudi tena” Yes, but the s*x was sweet.
Will it be natural birth or a Cesarian section? And then silence. Is the baby alive? Oh they’re two? A cry. Relief. Awe. Paperwork.
Then comes the unsaid syllabus: stitches, hormones like wild weather, milk that won’t cooperate, a body you’re learning again, a partner figuring out how to be useful, visitors who don’t wash their hands, chronic fatigue, love that arrives tired but certain. The village you have and the village you still need.
We’re gathering these experiences so our community is prepared, more gentle, and better at supporting maternal health; so would-be and current parents don’t walk in blind.
