The disgust towards Raila by Kenyans isn’t new. After the 1997 when he ran and became a distant 3rd, he
cooperated with Moi’s KANU, which annoyed the then Kenyan youth.
Team Raila saw it in their interest to bargain with KANU about a 3rd term for Moi in exchange for a VP and successor to Moi. That would in their assumption prepare Raila for a presidential stab to succeed Moi in 2007. Had Moi agreed to Raila-NDP strategy, Raila would have been made Vice President in exchange for Moi rule which would have been extended to 2007, after which Raila would have inherited the merged KANU entity.
Had Raila gotten his way, he would have re-energized & led KANU to 2017 after which maybe Kalonzo would have taken over. Great men bend the arm if history. And had Raila gotten his way would for sure have bent the arm of history.
Whether it’s Moi’s Kanu or Uhuru’s Jubilee, and then Ruto’s UDA, Raila has a knack for propping up desperate and collapsing regimes. Weaken them through Maandamano then armtwist them.
It sounds bad and evil but to me this was strategy 101 straight out of Niccolo Machiavelli The Prince - the end justifies the means…. Moi would have gotten his 3rd term, baba would have become KANU leader & Moi’s project, Kenyans would have elected Raila as The 3rd President, called referendum, reinstated the 2 term limit, established powerful Prime Minister and led Kenya to prosperity. He Would still have given us a parliamentary democracy like he always wanted, and would have been a powerful PM to date.
