Mzee Mutungi Nzioki, who is serving a 15-year sentence at Kamiti Medium Prison over a defilement conviction, has maintained that he was falsely accused and wrongfully jailed.
According to Mutungi, the case began after a disagreement with a local Assistant Chief in Makueni County over free building stones from his business. He was later linked to the pregnancy of a 15-year-old girl despite suffering from a serious reproductive health condition at the time.
No DNA test or medical examination was conducted and says there were no eyewitnesses connecting him to the allegations. Despite this, he was convicted in 2020, with his appeal dismissed in 2021.
Mutungi says he has since lost his freedom, family and business while continuing to insist on his innocence. The case has sparked debate among Kenyans, with some calling for a review of the matter and possible DNA testing to establish the truth.
