Hockey Boys: A New Battle for Regional Supremacy in Morogoro

The stage is set for another chapter in the history of East African secondary school hockey as the 23rd FEASSSA Games head to Morogoro, Tanzania, from August 12–23, 2026. The boys’ hockey tournament promises a fascinating contest between established giants and ambitious challengers, with the participating schools carrying the weight of a rich championship history.

A number of sports at the FEASSSA Games have been strongly associated with Kenyan dominance; with boys’ hockey also on the roll. From 2007 through 2019, Kenyan schools won every recorded edition, with St. Anthony’s Boys of Kitale and Friends School Kamusinga emerging as the two most successful sides. In fact, both St. Anthony’s and FS Kamusinga have won five titles, apiece.

St. Anthony’s and Kamusinga set the early standard

St. Anthony’s established itself as the benchmark, lifting the regional trophy in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2018. Kamusinga was equally formidable, winning in 2007, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2019.

The rivalry between the two Kenyan powerhouses defined much of the competition's early history.

Kisumu Day also broke into the list of champions in 2017, showing that the competition was not exclusively a two-school affair.

Uganda changes the balance

The biggest shift in the hockey landscape came after the interruption of the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Associations calendar in 2020 and 2021; as a result of COVID 19. Kakungulu Memorial School of Uganda ended Kenya's long-standing monopoly by winning the boys' hockey title in 2022 at Arusha, and successfully defended it in 2023 at Huye.

The Ugandan school has since become one of the most important forces in regional boys' hockey. In 2025, Kakungulu Memorial returned to the summit, defeating Kenya's challenge to reclaim the title in Kakamega.

A championship that has changed hands

The recent history makes this year's tournament particularly intriguing. Musingu High School won the title in 2024, ending the immediate Ugandan dominance, before Kakungulu Memorial reclaimed it in 2025.

Now, Kakungulu Memorial enters Morogoro with the confidence of a defending champion, but the Ugandans face a formidable Kenyan contingent.

Moro groups promise an exciting contest

The 2026 draw has placed Arusha Meru (Tanzania), Namilyango College (Uganda), FS Kamusinga (Kenya) and reigning defending Champions, Kakungulu Memorial School (Uganda), in Group A.

Group B features Mbarara High School and Ntare School of Uganda, St. Anthony's Boys of Kenya, and Benjamin Mkapa of Tanzania.

That draw immediately creates several intriguing storylines. FS Kamusinga and St. Anthony's Boys represent two of the most decorated names in the history of FEASSSA boys' hockey, while Kakungulu Memorial arrives as the reigning champion. Tanzania, meanwhile, will be looking to use the home advantage to make a deeper impact in a tournament traditionally dominated by Kenya and Uganda.

The big question in Morogoro

With Kakungulu Memorial defending the crown, the question is whether Uganda can maintain its recent resurgence or whether one of Kenya's historic hockey powerhouses will reclaim the regional throne.

The numbers make the contest even more compelling: St. Anthony's and FS Kamusinga have five recorded titles, apiece, and Kakungulu Memorial three in the championship history.

The 2026 edition therefore presents Kakungulu Memorial with an opportunity to move closer to the two Kenyan giants, while FS Kamusinga and St. Anthony's have a chance to restore their dominance.

Morogoro is ready. The champions are defending. The giants are returning. And East Africa's best schoolboy hockey teams are once again fighting for regional supremacy.

"Which school will be the last team standing?" This is definately for Team Kenya. You have this one Boys.

Hockey Girls: A Look Back at the Champions and Preview of the Morogoro Games

The FEASSA Games have long provided one of the biggest platforms for secondary school hockey in East Africa, bringing together some of the region’s strongest girls’ teams in a competition built around talent, discipline and national pride.

Over the years, the Hockey Girls championship has been dominated by Kenyan schools, although Uganda has increasingly challenged that supremacy. The roll of honour tells an interesting story of changing power in East African school hockey.

FEASSA Hockey Girls Champions Through the Years

The championship began with a remarkable run by Kerugoya of Kenya, who won four titles between 2008 and 2012. Kerugoya's dominance was followed by another impressive Kenyan era led by Sinyolo, who captured five consecutive championships from 2013 to 2017.

The title then moved to Trans Nzoia Girls in 2018 before Uganda made a major breakthrough via Kakungulu Memorial, which won the championship in 2019 and again in 2022.

Kenya subsequently regained the crown through Nyamira Girls in 2023, before St. Joseph's Girls Kitale took over in 2024 and successfully defended the title in 2025.

This history shows just how strong Kenya has been in FEASSA girls' hockey. Out of the 15 championships listed, 13 have been won by Kenyan schools, while Uganda's Kakungulu Memorial has accounted for the other two.

Morogoro Set for Another Big Hockey Girls Battle

Attention now shifts to Morogoro, Tanzania, where the 23rd edition of the FEASSA Games is scheduled for 12–23 August. This 23rd Edition of the regional championship will bring together schools from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi across a wide range of sports.

Hockey Girls promises to be one of the competitions to watch, with eight teams divided into two groups.

The draw creates an especially fascinating storyline because it brings together two recent champions and one of the region's most successful schools. St. Joseph's Girls Kitale enters the tournament as the back-to-back champions, while Nyamira Girls are former champions and Kakungulu Memorial has twice lifted the regional crown.

The 23rd FEASSA Games will feature over 22 secondary-school sports, with hockey among the disciplines.
