On Sunday during our leadership class, we delved into a deeply reflective topic, DREAM SU***DE. When it is Leadership class time, I am always very attentive and I found myself fully engaged. Dr. David, with his calm yet sharp delivery, unpacked the tragic story of Samson from the Book of Judges. Though Samson was born a chosen child, set apart as a Nazarite to fulfill a divine mission, his life spiraled due to carelessness, selfish choices, and a failure to honor his calling. It was sobering to realize that even though he was blessed with immense strength and purpose, he allowed his personal desires and indulgences to override wisdom and discipline.
Dr. Kabera explained that Samson’s downfall was not a single event, but a pattern. It started by ignoring boundaries, prioritizing pleasure, and being ruled by emotions. He broke his vows, sought gratification in wrong places, and eventually trusted the wrong person (Delilah) who directly contributed to his defeat. Even in his final moments, Samson asked for strength not to fulfill purpose, but to avenge himself and die with his enemies. As Dr. Kabera humorously but truthfully pointed out, HIS LEGACY WAS THAT HE KILLED MORE PEOPLE IN DEATH THAN WHEN HE WAS ALIVE😆. What a weak and avoidable end for someone born with greatness in his veins?
Young people today are facing the same tragic cycle. Let me tell you Maina, they are killing their own dreams through arrogant decisions, ignoring wise counsel, and forgetting their true identity. Many are gifted, talented, and full of potential, but because they want quick satisfaction, validation, or revenge, they end up sabotaging their future. Whether it's substance abuse, laziness, toxic relationships, or disobedience, the cost of these choices can be irreversible. Just like Samson, they were born for greatness but are drifting toward irrelevance, not because they lack ability, but because they lack self-control. I know that that topic did not end there, I know Daktari had more for us, only that time did not allow.
I cannot conclude without talking to the young people. My message to every one of you is this: DON’T KILL YOUR DREAM. Guard it, nurture it, and live with purpose. Know who you are, and don’t trade your destiny for temporary pleasure. Listen to mentors, obey God’s guidance, and stay grounded in your values. You were not born to die with your enemies or fade away without impact. You were born to build, lead, and leave a lasting legacy of purpose. Protect your dream at all costs.
