It’s Sunday afternoon, a day after we arrived in Kinshasa, and we are here to catch the buzz of this vibrant community. Apart from music, we are here to experience another one of Matongé’s famous cultural expressions: the Sape movement.

Said to have been drived into global attention by another Congolese music royalty, the late Papa Wemba, La Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes, or simply La Sape, is a fashion movement unlike any other. In English, it translates to Society of Tastemakers and Elegant People.
As the movement’s former high priest, Papa Wemba is still referred to as ‘le Pape de la Sape’, the father of ‘Sapologie’. Today, stars like Ferré Gola carry the torch forward.
Outside Mayaza Bar, an afternoon crowd has already gathered around red plastic tables facing a TV set mounted at the far end. Here, shoeshine boys, street food vendors, and retailers of herbal libido boosters jostle for their attention.

As we take our seats, we are joined by Francis Nsakala, a Sape, and his two extravagantly dressed mates. Over cold beers, poulet mayo (mayo chicken) and raucous football fans, Nsakala educates us on what it means to be a Le Sapeur.
This uniquely Congolese street expression not only symbolises fashion savvy but also social resistance. To understand this, you need to know that many sapeurs are regular Kinshasa residents, doing informal jobs that bring little pay. Yet they’ll spend almost every franc they earn on designer clothes , because for them, style is identity, and identity is dignity.
As purveyors of high fashion in the mostly unlikely of settings, their message is simple: They are street aristocrats whose identity has been forged by style and creativity in a world where money does the talking.

As we bid Nsakala and his mates goodbye, the hot day has given way to a humid night crackling with music, sin, and urban dysfunction.

It’s midday as we descend towards Kinshasa International Airport. The day is Saturday, October 25, 2025. Holding a handwritten notice with the name of our organization and the hotel we are headed to; we quickly spot our driver Havré just as a mass of taxi operators starts encircling us. Havré quickly leads us out of the commotion.

It’s a long ride to the hotel. Located in the city Centre, Hotel Royal is about 23km from the airport, but the gridlock on the roads ensures we take about two hours to reach there.
In Gen Z parlance, the road to the city is giving post-apocalyptic vibes. Forming the city’s public transport network are rusting yellow Toyota taxis, Mad Max-esque Mercedes Sprinter vans threatening to fall apart, ‘open roof’ tuk-tuks and a million taxi-motos (motorbike taxis or wawas as they are also locally known) all hooting, swerving, and competing for passengers.
To add to the chaos, nearly all vehicles are right-hand drive, yet they are driven on the right side of the road, thanks to government decree not long ago, according to a local driver.
Most buildings by the road look incomplete or neglected. Almost the entire stretch is straddled by markets and flooded by hawkers selling bottled water to knock-off sunglasses.

As you approach the city Centre, things begin to ease up and a semblance of order starts to appear. Our hotel is located at 3 Av. Kitona in the Gombe business district.
After recovering from the shock of our hotel room charges, we are ushered into the air-conditioned rooms full of creature comforts way beyond our backpacker budget.
After a refreshing shower, it is time to do a bit of exploring. But we have a huge problem. Our driver, who could communicate in a smattering of English, is long gone and we have just realized Kiswahili is as alien as Klingon. But like the intrepid teen detectives we read about in junior school, we are determined to make it work…..

The world we live in now recognizes information as currency, and communication then becomes the cheque that cashes it, allowing us to purchase attention, emotion and memory, crucial elements in effective strategic communication.

At the African Society for Laboratory Medicine Special Convention on Diagnostics, one truth stood out clearly: Africa is ready to lead the conversation on better diagnostics. But for that leadership to translate into action, evidence must cross the bridge from laboratories to communities.

Strategic communication is that bridge. It turns complex science into shared understanding, public debate, and accountability.
Distory is proud to be part of this conversation, showing how storytelling amplifies the voices of the scientists safeguarding our continent.

Proud moment for Team Distory!
We huddled together and followed the Global AMR Media Awards live, eventually celebrating together as our film “The Fatal Divide” was announced as 2nd Prize Winner, Africa Region.

The win means much more than the accolades. It is a testament of power held by storytelling in strategic communication and collaboration. These two are critical in amplifying AMR awareness across Africa.

To , your creativity, dedication, and passion made this moment possible.
This victory is yours.

Addis Ababa is reaching for the skies. Defying stereotypes about African urban spaces. Its river restoration projects, its infrastructure, its decentralization and its people centred design represents all the good things about a new Africa.

And as Addis reclaims its space as one of the best cities on the continent, the continent’s health professionals are also finding their voice.

From the craddle of mankind, Africa’s leaders, scientists, and storytellers came together to chart the continent’s next steps in the fight against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

And just as the ancient poets stood firm on Ras Dashen to pass on tales of old to those who came after them, we too believe that stories have the power to convey the science of AMR to those who matter most.

Africa, just like Addis Ababa’s skykine, is rising, and storytelling remains at the heart of how we advocate, empower, and shape our shared future.

Stories give a face to the science. Stories bring data to life. Stories define us. Stories are us.

African Voices in the Fight Against AMR

This Wednesday, two of our storytellers will be speaking at the Regional Media Webinar on AMR“Beyond the Headlines: Equipping Journalists to Lead the AMR Conversation.”

At Distory Communications, we believe science finds its power when people understand it.
Our role is to translate complex health and scientific data into compelling stories that audiences can relate to, act on, and advocate for.

As Africa confronts Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) a silent but urgent threat, journalists and communicators are essential.
They connect science to society, shape public understanding, drive behaviour change, and hold systems accountable.

We are proud to partner with ECSA-HC, Africa CDC, Amref Health Africa, The World Bank, and other partners to empower journalists across the continent with the tools to report AMR with clarity, depth, and impact.

Together, we can amplify African perspectives, strengthen public awareness, and drive action toward better health outcomes for all

Beyond borders 🇪🇹

Our crew got to experience Ethiopia’s rich culture up close, the colors, the laughter, joy& the warmth that turns every moment into a story worth telling. Each interaction reminded us how culture shapes perspective and fuels creativity in the way we tell stories.

It’s in spaces like these that we find the heart of our stories ,connecting, learning, and creating with purpose.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) doesn’t affect everyone equally.
From mothers in informal settlements who can’t afford a sick day, to the elderly who struggle to access care, the fight against AMR is deeply tied to gender and equity.

To truly respond to AMR, we must go beyond hospital walls and into the communities, to understand how people live, heal, and make daily choices. Because only when solutions are grounded in lived realities can they create lasting change.
