The Bible describes a true friend as someone who loves unconditionally, sticks with you through difficult times, and helps you grow in character. True friends are like a brother in times of adversity, offer heartfelt advice, and sharpen each other's spirit like iron sharpens iron. They are also righteous and choose their friends carefully, avoiding those who lead to wrongdoing.
Characteristics of a true friend
Loyal and present in adversity: A true friend "loves at all times" and is especially there for you in times of trouble. They are described as a "brother born for adversity" and are a treasure when life is difficult.
A source of honest counsel: They provide genuine, heartfelt advice that can be difficult to hear but is ultimately trustworthy. The Bible contrasts this with the "kisses of an enemy," which are deceitful.
Encourages spiritual and personal growth: True friends, like "iron sharpens iron," help bring out the best in each other and encourage each other to "love and good works".
Careful in their choices: The righteous are warned to choose friends carefully, as the "way of the wicked leads them astray".
A source of support and encouragement: A true friend is someone who helps you up when you fall, and provides support when you are alone.
A reflection of Christ's example: Jesus calls his followers friends and showed sacrificial love by laying down his life for them, setting the ultimate example for how we should love our friends.
Someone who brings you closer to God: A good friend will encourage you to seek and follow God above all else.
How to be a true friend
Be a friend to others: The Bible states, "A man who has friends must himself be friendly".
Practice virtues: As outlined in Colossians, strive to clothe yourself with "compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience," and forgive one another.
Offer encouragement: Make it a point to encourage one another, especially as you see "the Day drawing near".
Follow Jesus's example: A true friend follows Jesus's example by showing selfless and sacrificial love.
