From concept to field impact. 🌍🎧

In Somalia, we had the opportunity to present our Virtual Reality application developed for FAO as part of the Future of Pastoralism initiative. Using immersive storytelling and interactive environments, the experience allows stakeholders to step directly into pastoral communities, understand real challenges on the ground, and explore data and scenarios in a way that flat screens simply can’t deliver.

During the presentation, participants experienced the VR first-hand on Meta Quest headsets, sparking deep conversations around food systems, climate resilience, mobility, and decision-making. This wasn’t just a demo, it was a working tool for dialogue, empathy, and policy thinking.

Proud of the collaboration behind this build and the momentum it’s creating for XR in development and humanitarian work.

🚀 Hutchery 360 x FAO Somalia | Future of Pastoralism VR Exhibit. Mogadishu, Somalia.

Project:
🎯 An immersive VR experience showcasing FAO’s work in developing Somalia’s livestock sector and sustainable food systems.

Objective:
🌾 Provide FAO stakeholders with a deeper understanding of:

Livestock care and treatment facilities

Fodder farming and production

Sustainable food chain initiatives in remote areas of Somalia

Community education programs for best practices

Technology:
🎮 Meta Quest 3 headsets, powered by Hutchery 360’s custom VR app.
🛠️ Introduced “Expo Mode” for easy, passive VR engagement:

Ideal for first-time VR users (no motion sickness)

Seamless for managing multiple demonstrations (up to 6 headsets simultaneously)

Results:
✅ High engagement: Most users stayed through the full 10–15 minute experience.
✅ Strong feedback: Described as “interactive,” “informative,” and “deeply engaging.”
✅ Mission success: Delivered a vivid, real-world portrayal of Somalia’s agricultural future.

Reflection:
🌍 This project highlighted the powerful role VR can play in giving stakeholders and policymakers direct insight into development work on the ground.
🎥 Few things are as rewarding as seeing people not want to leave a VR experience!
