There is a good reason the Papa Madiba statue at the Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton City in JoBurg was erected as a larger than life monument. I could barely make it to his knee.

Simply, Africa is still struggling to produce politicians with the kind of political maturity and rounded temperament as Mandela. He was able to tolerate and embrace his erstwhile white politician Frederik W. de Klerk as Deputy President without making his race an issue, notwithstanding all the pen-up anger towards the apartheid era.

Mandela epitomizes the kind of leadership that Africa craves. Among many of the presidents in our continent today, there is open display of political immaturity, manifested through witch-hunt, settling of scores, betrayal of political covenants, and abuse of power.

To my daughter,

Today you depart for the UK to study, I'm overwhelmed with joy and fatherly pride. I know you just too well, that you're, intelligent, hardworking, resilient and a critical thinker.

You will meet Americans, Mexicans, Germans, Canadians, French, Portuguese, Chinese, Koreans, Indians, fellow Africans, Australians, a few Russians, some Arabs, Italians and Greeks — and certainly the British. Go and make a statement on that global platform. Charm them with your wit and excellence. Pick what you must, reason with every challenge, learn all you can and grow into a dynamite version of yourself.

Your values will be tested to the core, beginning with your morals, your sense of identity, your mental stamina and your faith foundations. I know what your mother and I have instilled in you. You are solid as a diamond. Remain steadfast.

I have bequeathed you a godly heritage; don't throw that away. Trust in the Lord always, with all your heart. When you feel things slipping, let me know. I'm cheering you, supporting you, praying for you. The future I've been talking about is here.

The day you were born almost two decades ago, I came into that nursery and held your tiny frame and declared, "Kenya is too small for you," and I meant every word. And today I say, "Africa is too small for you." You are meant for a global platform.
