Be very kind to church workers/ volunteers (worship leaders, ushers, protocol team, etc) when you meet them on Sunday or if you’re in close interaction with them daily, urges Kenyan Gospel musician Kestin Mbogo.

In a moving message shared on social media, Kestin highlighted the unseen struggles many of these servants of the church face behind the scenes, even as they continue to show up faithfully to serve in God’s house.

“Some of us have probably had the worst night of our lives, yet dragged our feet to Jesus, to serve Him,” she wrote, noting that not every tear seen during worship is a result of spiritual encounters, sometimes it stems from deep personal burdens.

She described a range of challenges volunteers endure: leaving sick children at home, living with the fear of unpaid rent and looming eviction, facing abusive relationships, and enduring emotional strain from strained family ties.

Others, she noted, serve despite battling anxiety, financial struggles, discouragement, or the simple weight of ministry itself.

Quoting scriptures such as Psalm 84:3 and Psalm 65:4, Mbogo reminded believers that many find solace in the sanctuary of God, even when life outside the church feels unbearable.

“Don’t be fooled by the nice outfits and make up,” she cautioned. “Some of us came to church with literally our last coin, trusting God for provision… We just want a shoulder to lean on.”

Her message emphasized the importance of empathy and sensitivity within church communities: “Not every tear in a service is from the anointing—sometimes it’s our careless words adding to a burden already carried. Please, be very, very kind.”
