When the BBC documentary was released civil society was incensed because it reopened closed wounds. This is what some of them had to say:
CivicFreedoms Forum
“It is unfortunate that Kenyans continue to be killed while exercising their constitutional rights. When will the Rule of Law finally be upheld?” the forum asked.
Referring to the BBC Africa documentary, the organization emphasized the urgency of justice: “With BBC Africa rehashing the unconstitutional events of June 25, we renew our demand for justice for all victims.”

Professor Fred Were, founding Executive Director of the Kenya Paediatric Research Consortium (Keprecon ), has spent his life championing the health and wellbeing of children. A professor of paediatrics and child health at the University of Nairobi, Prof. Were is driven by a singular vision: to eliminate child mortality in Kenya.

“I look forward to the day we bring our child mortality rate to zero,” he says. “We’ve made significant progress—down from 120 to 31 deaths per 1,000—but we need more public awareness to reach the standards of countries like Australia.”

Leading civil society organizations—Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), Katiba Institute, and Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI)—have strongly criticized the Media Council of Kenya’s Complaints Commission (MCK) for accepting a complaint filed by Safaricom PLC against investigative journalists from the Nation Media Group (NMG).

In a joint press statement, the NGOs accused Safaricom of using intimidation tactics to silence journalists and public interest reporting. They described the move as a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP) aimed at deflecting attention from serious allegations regarding data privacy violations.

“Rather than addressing the grave concerns raised, Safaricom has chosen to attack the messengers—journalists and civil society actors—who are demanding transparency and accountability,” the statement read.

We had some fun quick fire questions with Mike Mburu of Bunge Mashinani. He hates being branded as a politician because he fights for his communities. And he loves Nyama choma.
They are the proud awardees of the NGO Awards Best in Governance and Human Rights.
