PCEA Church Accuses Government of Pressuring Parliament, Criticizes Politicians’ Donations
The Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) has raised concerns over what it describes as government pressure on Parliament, accusing lawmakers of rushing to pass bills that serve the government’s interests while neglecting the pressing issues facing ordinary Kenyans. The church also expressed frustration over what it sees as a growing disconnect between legislative priorities and the real struggles of the Kenyan people.
The key remarks were delivered by Rt. Rev. Patrick Thegu Mutahi, the Moderator of the 24th General Assembly of the PCEA, who criticized the government for manipulating Parliament to push through legislation without considering the welfare of citizens. "Parliament seems to be under undue pressure to pass bills that benefit the government, while the real concerns of the people are ignored," Mutahi stated.
In his address, Mutahi also condemned the acceptance of large donations from politicians during church fundraising drives, raising suspicions about the source of such substantial sums. "Where is this money coming from? Suspicious characters are using flashy displays of wealth to sell fear," he said. "No legitimate business in Kenya is generating that kind of profit."
The church leaders pointed out that many of the promises made by politicians during campaigns have gone unfulfilled, contributing to widespread disillusionment among the public. "Kenya is in a state of frustration. The promises made to the people are not being delivered," Mutahi added, calling for a renewed focus on the needs of the citizens rather than political agendas.
Additionally, the PCEA called for the immediate withdrawal of Kenyan police from Haiti, urging the government to reconsider its involvement in the international peacekeeping mission. "Our police should be focused on serving and protecting Kenyans, not engaged in foreign conflicts," Mutahi concluded.
The speech has sparked widespread discussion on the relationship between politics, the church, and the public’s growing dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs.
