*A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 Episode 1 Recap*
Similar to the short story it is based on, "The Hedge Knight" opens with Dunk mourning his former master, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, in the knighthood traditions as the rain pours heavily.
After burying Arlan, Dunk considers his options for the future for a while. He talks to his horses and speculates about joining the Gold Cloaks in King's Landing.
He eventually leaves for a tournament at Ashford Meadow, seizing Ser Arlan's sword, shield, and horses as his own, following an unexpected and upsetting moment in which he is seen pooping behind a tree.
On his trip to Ashford, Dunk stops at an inn next, where he sees Egg, a little, bald boy playing outdoors. Their first interaction occurs when Dunk gives the little boy instructions on how to care after his ponies.

Dunk then goes to see a puppet play, when he first sees Tanselle, the charming storyteller. The similarly uncomfortable Dunk is instantly drawn to Tanselle as she displays her timidity in her performance.
Dunk ultimately sees Manfred Dondarrion after the party, but he says he doesn't remember Dunk or Arlan of Pennytree and turns to go, leaving Dunk unsure of who to approach to testify on his behalf so he may participate in the games.After traveling all the way to Ashford in the cargo compartment of a farmer's cart, Dunk returns to his camp to discover that Egg has settled there, marking the ideal conclusion to "The Hedge Knight." Egg has prepared the campground, cleaned Dunk's clothes, and is preparing fish for supper. Following a charming exchange of words, Dunk formally accepts Egg as a squire.
As a shooting star soars overhead, our hedge knight and squire settle down comfortably underneath their elm tree in the episode's climactic scene. Egg attempts to explain that they are the only knights viewing the star because everyone else is sleeping in tents. Egg smiles to himself immediately after realizing that this could indicate that they are the only ones who are lucky.
