I WAS COVERED!

My dad - our family’s sole breadwinner - was doing fairly well financially. Dare I mention that I actually came from a fairly well-off family? By the standards of the day, we could be counted among the “rich kids”, somehow... at least in the eyes of people from our original home, and many others.

We had all the basic needs covered - and most wants, too.

Dare I also mention that I was one of my father’s favourite children? I knew it from the rare pet names he called me - soft reminders of a time when love needed no explanation - and from the way he defended me from my older sisters, even to the extent of suggesting that I shouldn’t do household chores, not even in my twenties 😁😛.

My sisters, of course, would have their share of disagreements with my dad (not the fist type, of course). Luckily, we never had serious fights among ourselves - just the usual: “This one is dodging housework;” “She takes too long to finish simple tasks;” “I won’t help her; let her do it till tomorrow if she has to.”

Coming from that kind of background, I was certain my life at the university would unfold without trouble. If anything were to go wrong, I was sure it wouldn’t be because of money - or matters of the heart.

A HISTORIC EVENT

My joining the University was a historic event.
It was a first of many things: The first person in my family to successfully complete O' Levels; The first to complete A' Levels; The first to join a University; and, most interestingly, The first in the entire area (ward) to take the course I had been admitted to.
It was a virgin venture in many aspects.
I was, sort of, a trailblazer.
And, I was well aware of these things, and so much more.
I was ready to go all the way and make history.
After familiarizing myself with the environment and basic amenities, it was time to attend orientation at the faculty.
I was ready; I was there.
Speaker after speaker, the faculty and university staff at large briefed us on what to expect, and what was expected of us.
As they all spoke, there was this inexplicable feeling deep down my heart. It was sme kind of joy? fire? excitement? satisfaction?
I really don't know.
You know, I was joining one of the most prestigious institutions in the entire region! And... I had crossed the borders for the very first time in my short life on earth... Another first?
A few days later, lectures kicked off in earnest. You should have seen me carrying my book/document wallet😅🤩Pure bliss.
Mehn, I was ready to conquer this world and make my parents PROUD.
