More than 1,100 workers in Kenya are facing layoffs after Meta ended its content‑moderation contract with Sama, an outsourcing firm that previously handled Facebook moderation in sub‑Saharan Africa. Sama says it received formal notice from Meta to end a major engagement at its Nairobi office, a decision that affects 1,108 employees, many of whom are tied to the now‑terminated moderation workstream. The contract ran from 2019 to 2023 and has been the subject of intense scrutiny and multiple legal challenges. Both Meta and Sama have faced lawsuits from former moderators alleging poor working conditions, unfair dismissal, and psychological harm. In 2024, a Kenyan court ruled that Meta could be sued locally over the claims. Meta says it ended the partnership because Sama "did not meet our standards." Sama, meanwhile, says it is working to support affected employees through the redundancy process.
