“Tell your story.
Shout it. Write it.
Whisper it if you have to.
But tell it.
Some won't understand it.
Some will outright reject it.
But many will
thank you for it.
And then the most
magical thing will happen.
One by one, voices will start
whispering, 'Me, too.'
And your tribe will gather.
And you will never
feel alone again.”
― L.R. Knost

We bid farewell to one of Kenya’s most pivotal legends in athletics - Benjamin (Ben) Jipcho (1943-2020) as he departs the world stage. The 3000m steeplechase Olympic Silver medallist passed away a few days ago but will always be remembered amongst the Sports fraternity as a runner and team player who sacrificed himself for the greater good.

Quoting from an upcoming Footprints Press Compendium on the greatest of Kenya’s runners by Susan Githuku with a Foreword by the President of Kenya, HE Uhuru Kenyatta .. "The New York Times once called Jipcho ‘the most notorious rabbit in track history’, referring to the role he played as pacemaker in the 1,500 metres final at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. By strategically setting a pre-discussed and agreed fast pace, Ben Jipcho allowed Kipchoge Keino to triumph over pre-race favourite Jim Ryun of the USA. After pulling Keino through a 56 second first 400 metres, Jipcho established a commanding lead, before falling back and allowing his teammate to pass him with 800 metres to go, a strategy that had been crafted by the Kenyan team to counter Ryun’s famed finishing kick, which had left him unbeaten over this distance for three years." the rest, as they say, is history. Keino won the race and Kenya's formidable reputation on the track took hold!

It would have been a singular honour to place the book - GOING THE DISTANCE – THE GREATEST OF KENYA’S RUNNERS 1958-2019 in his hands!. May He Rest In Eternal Peace. May his family be comforted that his legend will live on..... And at Footprints Press, we continue to identify and showcase the heroes amongst us - some as unassuming as the now late Ben Jipcho!
