First-year university and TVET students β€” this is the final call.

The application window for government funding β€” HELB loans and Higher Education Fund scholarships β€” closes on Monday, 21 September 2026. The Ministry of Education extended it from the original August 31 deadline after 789,422 applications came in, giving students who missed that first cutoff one more chance.

Who needs to apply:
β–Έ First-time university students
β–Έ First-time TVET students
β–Έ Continuing students who haven't yet applied for their subsequent loan

HELB has already started disbursing funds to students who applied earlier. The longer you wait, the further back in that queue you land.

Apply at hef.co.ke for first-time applications, or dial *642 # if you're a continuing student applying for a subsequent loan.

Don't leave it for Monday night. Government portals slow down hard in the final hours before any deadline.

Have you applied? Comment "Done βœ…" or "Still pending ⏳" β€” let's see how many people still need to move before Monday. πŸ‘‡

HELB Alert for KMTC, University and TVET Students

Two different deadlines, two different groups. Know which one applies to you.

KMTC Certificate and Diploma students:
HELB opened a dedicated loan application window for KMTC students for the first time ever. Deadline: September 30, 2026.

University and TVET first-time applicants:
The Ministry of Education, through Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, has extended the funding application deadline to September 21, 2026 β€” after the initial window closed August 31 with 789,422 applications already received.

"All eligible first-time applicants in universities and TVETs are invited to promptly apply for funding within this extended window," CS Ogamba confirmed.

The government has already disbursed Ksh22.12 billion in first-semester funding to continuing university and TVET students β€” so if you're a first-year who missed the original deadline, this extension exists specifically for you.

Quick summary:
βœ“ KMTC Certificate & Diploma students β†’ apply by September 30 at hef.co.ke
βœ“ University/TVET first-year students β†’ apply by September 21 at hef.co.ke
βœ“ Continuing students β†’ your loan applications opened earlier and follow a separate cycle

What to have ready:
βœ“ National ID
βœ“ Admission letter from your institution
βœ“ Parents' or guardians' ID copies
βœ“ Guarantor details

Many KMTC students and parents keep asking the same question:

How much are the fees?

Here’s the current structure for government-sponsored (regular) students placed through KUCCPS:
β–Έ Year 1: KSh 82,200
β–Έ Year 2: KSh 78,000
β–Έ Year 3: KSh 78,000

Breakdown for
Year 1:
Semester 1: KSh 43,200 (includes one-time registration & processing fees)
Semester 2: KSh 39,000

Years 2 & 3:
KSh 39,000 per semester (KSh 78,000 total per year)

These fees cover tuition, examinations, library & ICT, transport, maintenance, activity, and research & development.

Important notes:
β–Έ Accommodation, meals, books, uniforms, and personal expenses are NOT included.
β–Έ Self-sponsored and foreign students pay significantly higher fees.
β–Έ Always confirm the exact amount on your official admission letter β€” fees can be reviewed by KMTC.

How to pay:
βœ” M-Pesa Paybill: 222222
βœ” Account number: Your KMTC admission number
βœ” Or use the bank details provided on your admission letter
Do not pay cash

Strong advice: Always confirm the exact amount and payment instructions on your official admission letter or with your specific campus bursar’s office, as minor variations can occur and the structure can be updated.

Mark this date if you haven't applied yet β€” August 31, 2026 is the deadline for first-time HELB applicants for the 2026/2027 academic year.

Important β€” KMTC students, know this specifically:

KMTC has been approved for HELB loans only β€” not government scholarships. This means KMTC students are eligible for the HELB loan product specifically, unlike some university students who may access both scholarship and loan funding.

A requirement you cannot skip:
To be eligible for HELB funding, you must have been placed into KMTC through KUCCPS. If you applied directly to KMTC outside the KUCCPS placement system, confirm your eligibility status before assuming you'll qualify.

What's confirmed about the process:
βœ“ HELB funding depends on KUCCPS completing student placement first
βœ“ Continuing students' loan applications for 2026/2027 already opened June 1
βœ“ First-time applicant deadline: August 31, 2026

⚠️ A warning worth repeating: HELB has previously flagged fake notices circulating online with false application dates. Only trust information directly from helb.co.ke or official HELB communication channels. If a notice asks you to call a number for "clarification" or "fast-tracking" β€” verify it directly with HELB first.

What to prepare before applying:
βœ“ National ID
βœ“ KMTC admission letter
βœ“ Parents' or guardians' ID copies
βœ“ Guarantor details
βœ“ Updated bank account details to avoid disbursement delays

August 31 is closer than it feels. Don't wait until the last week.

Have you applied for HELB yet? Drop your status below πŸ‘‡

Every year, students get caught by the exact same assumption β€” that once you're funded, you stay funded automatically. You don't.

MYTH: "Once you're placed and funded, HELB and scholarships continue automatically."

REALITY: HELB opened its Subsequent Loan Application for the 2026/2027 academic year specifically for continuing students. Not new applicants β€” students who already received HELB before. You dial *642 # and reapply. Every single year. No reapplication, no loan.

The Universities Fund runs the identical system. Scholarships for continuing students reopen as a completely separate annual application β€” not a one-time approval that quietly follows you to graduation.

How This Actually Catches Students

You got placed as a fresher. You got your first HELB disbursement. You assumed it just "continues." Second year rolls around, fee balance builds up, and suddenly you're barred from registering for your CATs β€” not because you didn't qualify, but because you never dialled *642 # to reapply.

This happens to thousands of continuing students every single year. Not because they're irresponsible. Because nobody told them funding requires annual renewal.

What You Actually Need To Do

βœ“ Mark your calendar for HELB's subsequent loan window β€” opens June each year for continuing students
βœ“ Dial *642 # and complete your application the moment it opens β€” don't wait until fee deadlines are already looming
βœ“ Check the Universities Fund portal separately β€” it's not the same application as HELB
βœ“ Confirm your application status before every semester starts, not after you're already blocked from registration

Placement gets you in. Funding does not follow you automatically after that. It's an annual responsibility you carry every single year you're enrolled β€” and missing the window doesn't pause your fees, it just leaves you to cover them yourself.

Visit studoke.com for funding deadline tracking and reminders.

12/08/2026

718,000 Kenyan students have left university programmes for TVET institutions. Not because they couldn't handle university. Because the job market stopped rewarding the degree over the skill.

MYTH: "TVET or diploma is for students who failed."

REALITY: A skills training programme called PropelA partnered with over 70 companies, trained more than 400 young people in electrical work, plumbing, welding, and lift maintenance β€” and achieved an employment rate above 80%. Compare that to the years some university graduates spend job-hunting with a certificate and no callback.

Kenya just signed a strategic partnership with Australia's Signet Institute specifically to align Kenyan TVET curricula with Australian occupational standards. The first cohort of Kenyan TVET graduates β€” trained for direct employment in Australian healthcare, civil engineering, and skilled carpentry β€” graduates in November 2026. Legal, structured, international employment built directly into the training.

Kenya Utalii College Just Joined KUCCPS

One of the most respected hospitality training institutions on the continent is now on the same application portal as every university degree. You apply for it exactly like you'd apply for Medicine or Law β€” same portal, same process, same legitimacy.

The Employer Data Nobody Talks About

A Federation of Kenya Employers survey found 20% of businesses had positions they simply could not fill. That's not a university-shaped gap. That's a TVET-shaped gap β€” skilled trades and technical roles sitting vacant while thousands of degree holders queue for entry-level office jobs that don't exist in enough numbers.

The government isn't ignoring this. Kenya launched its first-ever nationwide census of TVET institutions this year β€” specifically to map skills gaps and align training with real labour market demand, not guesswork.

Why the Stigma Survives Anyway

Because the shift happened fast, and family expectations move slower than labour market data. Parents who grew up when a degree guaranteed a government job are advising children in a market where that guarantee no longer exists.

718,000 students already made this decision with their feet. The stigma around TVET is not backed by employment data β€” the data says the opposite. Skilled trades are in genuine shortage, and Kenya is actively building international pathways specifically for TVET graduates.

Every form four leaver hears the same four courses on repeat. Medicine. Law. Engineering. IT. Meanwhile the government just quietly opened an entire economic sector almost nobody is applying into.

MYTH: "Only Medicine, Law, Engineering and IT are worth studying."

REALITY: Kenya just launched its National Blue Economy Strategy β€” organized around nine national priorities including sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, and marine ecosystem management, driven directly by the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs. This is now a formal government economic pillar, not a niche interest.

Mount Kenya University opened Kenya's first private Maritime Academy in Malindi β€” offering diplomas and degrees in marine navigation, marine engineering, port management, and oceanography. Courses almost nobody applies for, because nobody markets them as prestigious.

Pwani University, JKUAT, and Technical University of Mombasa already offer degrees in Marine Biology and Oceanography, Marine Engineering, and Marine Resource Management. Minimal competition for slots. Government-backed sector growth pushing demand behind it for years to come.

Same Pattern in Data

Entry-level data analysts in Kenya earn Ksh 80,000–150,000 per month. Mid-level professionals earn Ksh 180,000–250,000. Senior roles hit Ksh 300,000–350,000 and above.

Despite this, there's still a genuine talent gap β€” many graduates have the technical skills but can't connect data analysis to business strategy. That gap is opportunity sitting untouched, not a warning sign to avoid the field.

Why This Myth Survives

Nobody in your family talks about marine engineering at the dinner table. Nobody's cousin works in aquaculture. The courses that get repeated are the ones people already know β€” not the ones with the least competition and the most government backing.

The four "safe" courses are safe because everyone applies to them β€” which makes them the most competitive, not the smartest choice for every student. Blue economy programmes and data-driven fields carry real government investment, real salary data, and real slots sitting underfilled.
