Diamond back moth (DBM)(Plutella xylostella)

DBM is a serious pest of Brassicas and attacks all Brassica species. A full grown diamondback caterpillar is about 1cm long.Young larvae feed on leaves, leaving intact parchment like epidermis. Growth of younger seedlings is inhibited and also produces holes in leaves.

Management:

To control DBM in small size farms, cover seedlings with row covers (fine nylon mesh) to prevent moths from laying eggs on the leaves and or next to the plant.

Intercropping Brassicas with repellent plants such as tomato, reportedly reduces DBM infestation in cabbage. When intercropping with tomato, the cabbage crop is planted 30 days after tomato.

Biological control of DBM using parasitoid wasp Diadegma semiclausum has proven very effective

in the highlands of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Botanicals such as neem-based pesticides are very effective for control of DBM.

Physical protection method: dense planting of maize or sorghum around the field like a fence may be effective because the insect cannot fly over the maize and sorghum.

Chemical control: Cypermethrine based chemicals like DUDU-CYPER and ROKET (at 1ml/1L of water) may be effective. But insecticide application is less effective for egg, mature larvae and pupae

BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN POULTRY INDUSTRY.
Some may say its diseases,some say market others noughty workers but NO it is chicken feeds.
Especially in 2018 access to quality and affordable chicken feed has been the biggest challenge so far.Farmers whom used to grow maize and other feed raw materials have now diversified to other fields which offer more lucrative market prices.Kenyan poultry farmers are left to import raw materials from uganda and tanzania rather than farming thier own..This leads to their chicken feed prices higher than the mentioned countries.Bear in mind that uganda and tanzania are major distributors of poultry products in east africa in general.They can monopolise the market with a low price strategy.This makes even kenyan distributors rush into tanzania and uganda sidelining kenyan poultry products.
Egg prices has dropped yet again.Reason is cheap imports from neighboring countries.Has feeds prices ever dropped,never and it will not in the foresseable future.There are two ways one can succeed in the business one is by use of economies of scale(raise not less than 500 birds) and making your own feeds.
success in poultry business can be attributed to the factors below
-they grow major raw materials such as maize,sorgum,soya,sunflower and cotton
-they have burned all imports of poultry products(eggs,chicks,meat)

But where do we go wrong as kenyans
-we rely on imports
-the kenyan marker is a free market.This allows imports of poultry products from neighnouring countries
-some feed manufactures are not also genuine(do our chicken ever reach 90% production? Very rare if any.Major cause is poor quality feeds among other management problems.
In conclusion some of the solution to this problem is holding hands as farmers,lease land and grow chicken feed materials.Have blocks within every county and put a fixed price on all poultry products.Press the government restrict imports.The only things we need to impot are vitamin premixes,methionine,lysine and toxic binder.
But leasing land,growing raw materials is just but a temporary solution.On my opinion a permanent solution is to contract outgrowers whom will grow this raw materials and distribute it to us at a agreeable figure.With this raw materials available kenyan farmers can compete with other countries,this inturn empowers them.
