A new report shows many African countries are setting their own priorities on gender equality, especially in political inclusion and legal reform, and in some cases are progressing faster than global averages.

The 2025 Global Gender Gap Report by the World Economic Forum shows that twenty African countries now rank in the top 100 global list of countries that have reduced their gender gap.

One morning, thirteen years ago in Busia, Uganda, a man prepared to leave for work. But just before he left, he riffled through his pockets, pulled out some money, and handed it to his wife.

“Use this to buy some meat for our supper tonight.”

The woman opened her mouth to say something, but then, on second thought, decided against it. She scratched her head, cinched her leso tighter around her waist, and in a faltering voice, said, “Alright. I hear you.” She blinked back tears, but the man didn’t seem to notice. He didn’t realise his wife was in pain, that something was troubling her. Or maybe he did, but chose to turn a blind eye.

Life is beautiful. I know this statement might be a cliché or seem like a mundane saying. But indulge me for a moment. The word “beautiful” traces its etymology to the Latin word “bellitas”. “Bellitas” means “a pleasing state”.

So let us reframe our first statement again. Life is a pleasing state.

Now, that’s where the catch is, because life is not a pleasing state at all times. Sometimes, it’s difficult to find the pleasure in life. And I have been through my fair share of such times. I've even documented some of them on Qazini. Let me fill you in, using an interesting—at least to me—analogy from aviation.

From the dusty streets of Kawempe to the bright lights of the NBA Draft, Khaman Maluach’s story is a powerful reminder that belief can take you beyond borders. Though raised in Uganda, his heart chose to represent South Sudan, the country of his birth, on the global stage. He helped South Sudan qualify for their first-ever Olympics. His journey is not just about basketball, it’s about showing the world the beauty, resilience, and unstoppable spirit of Africa.

Kijani Kibichi’s (not his real name) journey in fighting to achieve what many men haven’t been able to do has been anything but easy. He is breaking free from the shackles of taboo and shedding off the layers of shame and weakness that have been pinned on men for decades, opening up about his journey with mental health. Looking back at how far he has come, he is proud of the young boy he was 15 years ago—the boy who withstood the test of time and held on to his sanity with all his strength.

Currently pursuing his Master's in Clinical Psychology, Kijani seeks to understand human behaviour and emotions in order to optimise the human experience.

Kijani talks about his mental health journey with Liz Chema-Mukigi.

A Mourning Letter to the Soul of Kenya

Dear Kenya,
We begin not with protest, but with mourning. For every single soul lost in this revolution, and for a dream that died before the nation grasped whether it was ever truly born.

We write this at a time of national despair. When children are in the streets, and their parents are watching with equal parts pride and panic. When the air is heavy with possibility… and tear gas. When the soul of our country is not just in question—it is on trial.

This is not a manifesto. It is a memory. A memory of everything we were promised…and still believe we might become.
