The Mexican government has proposed raising the gambling tax from 30% to 50% of gross income as part of an economic package for 2026. The funds are planned to be used for social programs in the fields of education, healthcare, housing and welfare. Additionally, the draft provides for the introduction of a tax on violent video games, which, according to the authorities, negatively affect mental health.
If the proposal is approved, Mexico will become one of the highest-tax gambling markets in Latin America. Experts warn that this could reduce investment in casinos and slow down the growth of the industry. The final decision must be made by November 15, 2025, and if approved, the document will be published by December 1, 2025.
