Did you know that the publishing firm, now known as Moran (E.A.) Publishers Ltd, when it was incorporated in Kenya, in 1970, was known as Books for Africa.
Hon. Arthur Moody Awori, who went on to become Kenya's vice president under Mwai Kibaki, was appointed the Chairman of Board of Directors.
In 1981, Books for Africa rebranded to become Macmillan Kenya. The following year, the company moved its operations to the 5th Floor of Queensway House, Kaunda Street, Nairobi. They moved again to what was then known as the publishers' district, Kijabe Street, in 1986.
The company moved to its current address, Judda Complex, along Wangari Maathai Road (formerly Forest Road), in 2006.
In 2009, David Muita, then managing director, kicked off plans to buy Macmillan Kenya Publishers Ltd.
The buyout sailed through, the following year, leading to the change of name to Moran (EA) Publishers Ltd.
Moran became the third publishing firm to divest from UK multinationals, to become fully locally owned, after East African Educational Publishers (from Heinemann) and Longhorn (from Longman).
Moody Awori, or Uncle Moody, as he came to be known, served as chairman of the board for over 30 years until his retirement in 2019, paving way for Muita.
In 2017, Moran published Riding on a Tiger, an autobiography of Moody Awori.

David Muita is the chairman of Moran (E.A.) Publishers Ltd. Away from Moran, Muita has over the years been heavily involved in the struggle for the recognition and inclusion of indigenous publishers in the provision of educational materials in schools.
He was also right in the thick of things when the Kenya Publishers Association (KPA) was being formed.
Muita was the third KPA chairman after the late Henry Chakava and Gacheche Waruingi. He served as chairman of the publishers’ body from 1997 to 2002. He served a second stint as chairman from 2005 to 2007.
Last year, when publishers were marking 25 years of the Nairobi International Book Fair, Muita was among those who were inducted into the pioneering class of the KPA Hall of Fame.
The picture below is Muita holding the trophy he received during the Hall of Fame ceremony.
Muita’s publishing journey started in 1983, when he applied for and got a job as an education sales rep with Macmillan Publishers. Then, he was working as a teacher in Jumbi High School, in Murang’a County, earning a monthly pay Ksh2,000.
His new job at Macmillan would fetch him a princely Ksh5,000.
He only lasted a day at his new dream job!
Find out how what happened next in our next post.
