Urgent Action Fund Africa is a pan-African rapid response Fund that supports advocates for Women and Girls' Rights, their organisations, collectives and movements to take actions that sustain their work and themselves before, during and after urgent situations.. Operating as an innovative virtual organisation, the Fund boasts a strategic presence in Africa’s four sub-regions in East Africa: Nairob

i, Kenya & Dar es salaam, Tanzania; North Africa: Cairo, Egypt; Southern Africa; Harare, Zimbabwe; and West Africa: Abuja, Nigeria & Douala,Cameroon. Recognising the need to move resources rapidly on a continent where opportunities arise and decline quickly, UAF-Africa uses a Rapid Response Grant making model to support unanticipated, time sensitive, innovative and unique initiatives. The Fund supports women to seize windows of opportunity that promote women’s agency in democratic governance, economic justice, natural resources governance, conflict transformation and justice processes while protecting their personhood, integrity and human rights. We achieve this by working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. We conduct our due diligence for approval or decline of a grant within 48 hours, hence the name Urgent Action Fund-Africa. To date, the Fund has supported over 600 women’s catalytic initiatives in 48 African countries. Grant applications are accepted in the 5 African Union official languages (English, French, Kiswahili, Portuguese and Arabic).

As part of the global 𝐔𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 consortium, solidarity and collaboration in action undergird our collective and regional work.

In , we recognise that solidarity, collaboration, and a culture of sharing strengthen our work. We leverage both the collective and regional uniqueness of each Urgent Action Fund to strengthen our responses, sharing resources with each other and coordinating our efforts, particularly in complex crisis settings that are increasingly transnational. We identify and prioritise the concerns of activists and groups in their contexts while spotting global trends, making our responses more effective.

Urgent Action Fund Africa remains steadfast in resourcing African Women’s Rights Advocates despite ongoing shifts in the philanthropic ecosystem.

Defending women’s rights and responding to crisis requires more than financial support. Our feminist-led approach goes beyond funding; we prioritise movement building, advocacy, and the creation of spaces for women’s voices to be heard. As part of the global Urgent Action Sister Funds consortium, we recognize that the majority of grantmaking globally is slow-moving. That is why we provide urgent resourcing to feminist activists and organizations according to their self-identified needs, acknowledging grant requests within 24-72 hours and making decisions as quickly as the same day.

We are there for movements in all moments on the continuum of crisis. means we do not wait for an acute crisis to break out to begin our action. And we do not fund when a crisis peaks and then step away: we recognize that activists have multifaceted needs that emerge over time as a crisis unfolds, and we accompany them long after most donors have moved on.
