ACK MT. KENYA SOUTH DIOCESE: St. James Cathedral Kiambu Marks Differently Abled Sunday with Powerful Call to Affirm the Value of Family

By Malachi Motano:

The first Sunday of December was observed with joy and reflection across the Diocese of Mt. Kenya South as churches celebrated Differently Abled Sunday. At ACK St. James Cathedral Kiambu, congregants gathered for a vibrant day of worship that highlighted inclusion, family, and the inherent value of every person created in God’s image.

The services were led by Assistant Provost Revd Anne Mwaura, supported by the pastoral team and church elders. The Bethany Cell Group served as ushers, warmly welcoming worshippers and ensuring a smooth flow of the day’s liturgy.

The cathedral hosted Revd Erickson Mugo, the Diocesan Coordinator for the Differently Abled Department, as the guest preacher. In his sermon titled “The Value of Family”, drawn from Colossians 3:1–25, Revd Mugo emphasized why the Diocese has set aside every first Sunday of December as Disability Awareness Sunday.

Addressing modern narratives that increasingly undermine the role of family, Revd Mugo reminded the congregation that God’s design for family remains “priceless and unshakeable.” He noted that families should provide shelter in times of storms, serve as sources of encouragement, and offer unwavering support even in moments of failure or loss. He further highlighted the deep wounds caused by rejection within families—especially for persons living with disabilities—and urged believers to cultivate homes filled with love, honour, and compassion.

Following the inspiring message, congregants fellowshipped in their various departments, sharing coffee, refreshments, and moments of meaningful connection.

The day concluded with a renewed sense of unity and purpose as worshippers celebrated the truth that every family matters and every individual holds immeasurable worth before God.
