The Kenyan publishing fraternity is mourning the loss of one of their own; Suleiman Gakuria, who succumbed to cancer last week.
Gakuria, popularly known as Sulee, by peers in the industry, was a consumate marketer, having worked with various institutions like Oxford University Press, Text Book Center, Storymoja Publishers and Twiga.
In eulogising him, the Kenya Publishers Association noted that Gakuria left a lasting impact in the industry.
"Suleiman was a respected colleague in our publishing fraternity. Throughout his professional journey, he collaborated with nearly all publishers," added the KPA statement.
Muhiddin Ngashe the CEO of Storymoja Publishers noted that Gakuria instrumental in introducing the Radius stationery brand to the Kenyan market "and led our national stationery sales with dedication, creativity, and quiet determination."
"He brought warmth, professionalism, and an unwavering work ethic to every interaction," added Ngashe. Gakuria worked with Storymoja from January 2023 to December 2024.
Wendy Njoroge, the founder of Soma Nami Books, described Gakuria as one of the coolest people she has ever known and had the pleasure of working alongside.
"He always got where my ideas were coming from and I could count on him to back me up every single time. Beyond the boardroom, Sule was effortlessly cool. He was the kind of person who could chat with everyone, from the delivery guy to the CEO, with the same warmth and ease," Wrote Wendy on her page.
Wendy and Gakuria worked together at Text Book Center.
