Mildred Wanyama, Mother of Kenyan Football Stars, Passes Away

Nairobi, Kenya – Mildred Wanyama, the mother of Kenyan football icons Victor Wanyama and McDonald Mariga, passed away in the early hours of Saturday, June 14, 2025, according to a statement released by Mariga.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, who left us peacefully today morning,” Mariga said. “We are currently making arrangements and will share more details soon! Thank you.”

Mildred, a former netball player, was married to Noah Wanyama, a retired footballer who played for AFC Leopards.

The couple, who met in the 1970s while working at Kenya Railways, raised five children: footballers Victor, McDonald, Thomas, and Sylvester Wanyama, and professional basketballer Mercy Wanyama, who plays in Spain.

Burial arrangements are underway, with further details to be announced soon.

A Nairobi court granted young Kenyan author Webster Elijah Ochora a Ksh 50,000 cash bail after he denied charges of impersonating Charlene Ruto in connection with his book, Beyond the Name: Charlene Ruto and the Youth Uprising.
