The inquest into the killing of 29-year-old Gen-Z protester Rex Masai during Nairobiā€™s June 2024 anti-Finance Bill demonstrations has been closed after 30 witnesses testified before Milimani Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo.

The Directorate of Public Prosecutions informed the court on 7 September 2026 that it had completed its case, following final testimony from IPOA forensic expert Joshua Mutua, who confirmed that video footage of a plain-clothes officer firing at fleeing protesters on Mama Ngina Street on 20 June 2024 was authentic, unaltered and internally consistent.

Parties will now file written submissions, with the matter due for mention on 24 September ahead of the magistrateā€™s ruling on the circumstances of Masaiā€™s death.
