What do we need to take Kenyan animation to the international community?

Join the AfroFantasyLit movement on Saturday 30th September as we dig deep into the journey of Naddya Adhiambo, an accomplished Kenyan animator whose work has appeared on multiple international media networks.

Naddya has been creating fresh, nourishing African stories for audiences of all ages for over a decade. She began her work at Shujaaz.FM (2-time International Digital Emmy Winner). Later, at ZanaAfrica, she worked as the Supervising Illustrator for Nia Teen Magazine. She founded Nalo Studios and won the CICLIC Prize at Animation du Monde during the 2019 Annecy International Animation Festival for their flagship project titled U*i. Nalo Studios has led animation service work for Netflix, Walt Disney Animation, Nickelodeon and many more. Her most prominent work has been for Kizazi Moto on Disney Plus.

She enjoys pushing graphic language to a place that only animation can go. She is driven by the need to represent girls and women through her art. She holds a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Animation form Sheridan College (Canada).

Ahem! All book lovers, enthusiasts and clubbers are warmly invited to a fun, interactive evening discussion on African Myths & Legends in Modern Literature and Media, May 12th at Alliance Francaise Multimedia Library.
We look forward to meeting you in this free event moderated by Soila Kenya featuring authors, Mutendei Writes and Keith Kinambuga as we discuss putting to use and integrating African Myths and Legends in contemporary literature and film.
We will examine creative leeway, preservation and value maximization while referencing valued books like Wild Seed by Octavia E Butler and Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. We will also share how Africanum by Mutendei Writes and The Return of Syokimau by K. Kinambuga are furthering this need locally.

Prophetess Syokimau predicted the building of the first Kenyan railway and coming of the British Colonialists in the 1800s. She referred to the railway as a snake that emitted fiery smoke and the British as people with skin like white meat who spoke like chirping birds. It is no coincidence that the Syokimau Railway Station was built in her honor.
This is what inspired a modern take on a fictional story following her granddaughter as she discovers her powerful heritage against all odds.
