The Senate will gather at 2:30 p.m. to deliberate on the charges against the embattled Governor of Meru.

SUDI FORGIVES PROTESTERS WHO VANDALIZED, HIS NIGHT CLUB
Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has announced that he has forgiven the protesters who stormed and looted his nightclub during the Gen Z demonstrations on June 25, which led to the closure of the establishment. The protesters, in their anger, made off with liquor worth millions as the situation escalated into violence.

Earlier this year, Sudi had opened the Timba XO Club, located off the busy Eldoret-Nakuru highway. Despite the significant losses he suffered, Sudi, a close ally of President William Ruto, stated that he harbors no ill will toward those who damaged his property and business. He attributed the actions of the protesters to being misled by political rivals.

Sudi, who described his rise from humble beginnings as a matatu tout to becoming an MP, emphasized that he would not use his position in government to retaliate against those who supported him.

"I come from a poor family, I came from far away, having worked as a matatu tout and now serving the people of Kapseret as a Member of Parliament. It’s a miracle and for that reason, I cannot take advantage of my position in government to frustrate people who voted for me," Sudi said.

He added, "As a Christian, the Bible teaches me to forgive those who have wronged me. We must forgive one another, and I urge all Kenyans who lost their properties to do the same for the sake of peace in our country."

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) MP mentioned that he has put the losses from the protests behind him and is focused on starting over. He added, "If I continue dwelling on the loss and seek revenge, I would be going against God's will." Sudi revealed that he has already begun renovating the club and resuming his business.

Sudi accused unnamed individuals of hiring Gen Z youths to cause destruction and incite enmity among communities in Uasin Gishu.

The MP reiterated his commitment to fighting against ethnicity and tribalism, vowing to ensure that all communities in Uasin Gishu live in peace.

JIMI WANJIGI'S BODYGUARDS REMAIN IN CUSTODY
Duncan Odhiambo and Calvin Ochieng, bodyguards of businessman Jimi Wanjigi will remain in police custody after a Magistrate Court rejected a request for their release. Milimani Chief Magistrate Bernard Ochoi ruled that there are sufficient grounds to detain them pending further investigations.

The two individuals, Duncan Odhiambo and Calvin Ochieng, represented by lawyer Willis Otieno, had petitioned the court to reconsider its decision, arguing that the state had no justification for their continued detention.

The lawyer also urged for their release, alleging that they had evidence showing that security officers planted explosives at Wanjigi's home.

Earlier on Monday, Wanjigi secured court orders preventing police from entering his homes or business premises.

THE BROAD-BASED GOVT IDEA ORIGINATED FROM ME-MOSES KURIA
Moses Kuria, the former Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management Cabinet Secretary, claimed that the concept of a broad-based government implemented by President William Ruto was originally his idea. During a Monday night interview on Citizen TV, Kuria stated that he had proposed the idea of including the opposition in the government long before the recent Gen-Z protests.

"I can largely say that the notion of inviting the opposition to join the government was my idea. I anticipated potential issues and advised the president on the need to reform our politics," Kuria remarked.

Having served as a Cabinet Secretary, Kuria was among those not re-appointed after President Ruto dismissed his entire Cabinet following the Gen-Z protests. Kuria disclosed that he had engaged with various opposition leaders to encourage them to join the government.

He also stressed the importance of revisiting the 2010 constitution to establish a more inclusive government structure, expressing concerns that the current system might exclude certain groups after elections, which he believes should be avoided.

On July 19, President Ruto announced a new list of cabinet nominees, sworn in on August 8, which included four senior members of the ODM party: John Mbadi (National Treasury), Opiyo Wandayi (Energy and Petroleum), Hassan Joho (Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs), and Wycliffe Oparanya (Co-operatives and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development). These appointments have caused unrest within the opposition.

A NEW INITIATIVE TO DECONGEST PRISONS
On Monday, August 12, 2024, Chief Justice Martha Koome launched the Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) aimed at reducing overcrowding in the country’s prisons to maintain a sustainable prison population.

During the launch at the Industrial Area Remand and Maximum Prison, Koome emphasized that a large portion of those in prison have not yet been convicted, reminding that every accused individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

“The Judiciary is dedicated to reviewing sentences and, where appropriate, releasing convicts to perform community service instead of serving time in prison,” Koome stated.

The Chief Justice highlighted that community service orders not only ease the strain on the prison system but also act as innovative tools to support the government’s environmental conservation efforts through 'green sentencing.' This approach requires released individuals to engage in public duties like tree planting and environmental restoration.

Koome disclosed that in the last financial year, 2023/2024, the courts reviewed 6,555 sentences, of which 2,918 individuals were found eligible for release under community service orders.

She also pointed out that as part of the broader plan to encourage plea bargaining and diversionary strategies, petty offenders should not be imprisoned but instead directed towards community service or alternative sentencing options that allow them to make positive contributions to society.

TANZANIA ARRESTS OPPOSITION LEADERS
Tanzanian police have arrested key opposition figures, including Chadema party leader Freeman Mbowe and his deputy Tundu Lissu, along with several hundred young supporters, just before a scheduled rally. Rights activists criticized the move on Monday, describing it as "troubling."

Mbowe was taken into custody on Monday in Mbeya, a city in the southwest, following the arrest of other leaders the day before. The rally was intended to commemorate International Youth Day, according to Chadema's director of communication and foreign affairs, John Mrema, who shared details about the arrests on X (formerly Twitter).

He also told AFP that around 500 young supporters were detained by police as they made their way to the event in Mbeya and were being escorted back to their homes. Tanzanian police had banned the rally on Sunday, alleging that the party was planning violent demonstrations.

These arrests happened despite President Samia Suluhu Hassan's decision to lift a ban on opposition gatherings in January 2023.

The youth wing had expected about 10,000 participants for the International Youth Day event in Mbeya, under the slogan "Take charge of your future."

Tanzania is set to hold presidential and parliamentary elections late next year, the first since the 2021 death of former President John Magufuli.

MATHE WA NGARA, CHARGED WITH BHANG TRAFFICKING
Nancy Indoveria Kigunzu, also known as Mathe Wa Ngara, was charged on Monday alongside David Ochieng Okoth and Christopher Odipo Ochieng.

The alleged crime took place on August 9 at Georgina Apartments in the Mastore area along Juja Farm Road, Kiambu County where they all entered not guilty pleas to charges of trafficking 189,300 grams of cannabis, valued at over Ksh.5.6 million.

Additionally, the three are accused of conspiring to traffic narcotic drugs.

The prosecution opposed their release on bail, arguing that they pose a flight risk and lack a fixed place of residence. The court was informed that Mathe Wa Ngara had previously committed a similar offense.

However, Mathe Wa Ngara's lawyer, Danstan Omari, contested the application, stating that the offense is bailable and she does not present a flight risk.

The court ordered a probation report and scheduled the case for mention on August 19, 2024, when the report is expected to be presented.

36 YEAR WAIT BLESSING IN DISGUISE
Edwin Kurgat, Jacob Krop, and Ronald Kwemoi (Kenya's trio) narrowly advanced to the Paris Olympics 5000m final on Wednesday, keeping alive the country's hopes of winning its first title in the event since 1988.

World bronze medalist Jacob Krop finished fourth in the first heat with a time of 14:08.73, while his compatriot, the U.S.-based Edwin Kurgat, secured fifth place with 14:08.76, both earning spots in the final.

Ronald Kwemoi, competing in his second Olympics after finishing 13th in the 1500m at Rio 2016, ensured all three Kenyans progressed by placing sixth in the second heat with a time of 13:52.51. With reigning champion Joshua Cheptegei and his Ugandan teammate Jacob Kiplimo opting out of the 12.5-lap race, the Kenyan trio hopes this will be a stroke of luck as they aim to end the 36-year title wait.

John Ngugi won Kenya's last gold in the 5000m at the 1988 Seoul Games, long before the current trio was born.

“The challenge remains. While one problem is removed, many others lie ahead, so we must stay focused. The expected winners sometimes don’t win, so in the Olympics, every competitor is tough. We won't say we're advantaged now that Cheptegei and Kiplimo are out. There are still strong contenders like Jakob and the Ethiopians,” said Kurgat.

WARNING OF PLOT BY GOONS TO INFILTRATE 'NANE NANE DEMOS
Gilbert Masengeli, Acting Police Inspector General has issued a warning about the potential infiltration of the planned anti-government demonstrations on Thursday, called ' ,' by disruptive elements, posing a security threat to the nation.

In a press address on Wednesday, Masengeli revealed intelligence reports suggesting the possibility of such infiltration and emphasized that law enforcement officers are prepared to confront any troublemakers.

"The initial demonstrations in June were peaceful, but later protests escalated into riots with looting and property destruction," he stated. "Our intelligence indicates that criminals are planning to infiltrate tomorrow's demonstrations to commit further crimes. We have deployed adequate personnel in response."

Masengeli urged the public to remain vigilant during the protests and warned demonstrators against trespassing on protected sites such as the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and State House.

"Those intending to protest should do so lawfully," he said. "Kenya is our home, and it's everyone's responsibility to ensure its safety."

During a visit to the Embakasi Administration Police Training College (APTC) on Tuesday, following discussions with regional police chiefs, Masengeli mentioned that security across the country would be heightened but not excessively.

Sources told Citizen Digital that the discussions also covered the operational and logistical challenges faced by officers and strategies to address them for better efficiency within the NPS.

The meeting allowed Masengeli to meet his ground commanders for the first time as he aims to strengthen his temporary leadership of the Service before a permanent Inspector General of Police is appointed.

Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has announced plans to reintroduce the Linda Mama programme with improved benefits.

On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, PS Muthoni stated that the maternal healthcare programme will return under its original name but with added benefits for expectant mothers.

She emphasized that Linda Mama will be a key component of the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), which will replace the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

"This will be a stand-alone program under SHIF, just like it was before, to support mothers and babies," she said. PS Muthoni explained that the updated Linda Mama programme will cover both normal and caesarean deliveries.

She added that the programme will also include post-delivery care for mothers.

"For normal delivery, the benefit will be Ksh.11,000, while for caesarean delivery, it will be Ksh.32,000," PS Muthoni detailed.

The PS mentioned that funds have been allocated for the enhanced programme, and efforts are underway to secure additional funding as the new budget process begins. She also noted that there is ongoing public participation, allowing Kenyans to provide their input on the revamped Linda Mama programme.

Bangladesh's main police association has announced that its members were initiating a strike. This decision followed the previous day's protests, which the police had violently attempted to suppress, ultimately resulting in the prime minister's downfall.

"We are declaring a strike until the security of every police member is ensured." Bangladesh Police Association, representing thousands of officers, stated.

They also issued an apology for the police actions against the protesters.

On Monday afternoon, Bangladesh army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman revealed on state television that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had resigned and that the military would form an interim government.

Hasina, 76, who had been in power since 2009, faced accusations of election rigging in January and witnessed millions of people protesting for her resignation over the past month. The security forces' attempts to quell the unrest resulted in hundreds of deaths, but the protests persisted, and Hasina eventually fled the country by helicopter on Monday as the military abandoned her.

Despite this, the police had largely remained loyal to the government and reported facing retaliatory attacks from protesters after more than a month of violence, which claimed the lives of at least 413 people, including several police officers.

The Bangladesh Police Association's statement included an apology for the police force's actions against innocent students. They argued that their officers had been "forced to open fire" and felt unfairly portrayed as the "villain."
