ANNUAL REPORTS: An annual report is a document that is published by the directors of a club, company or organization, targeting the organization's shareholders or stakeholders. In such a report, the organization's profit-and-loss account, balance sheet, and the preceding year's activities are made public.

BOOKS: Clubs, businesses, organizations or individual persons may publish books that include biographies or autobiographies, the organization's history, or a compendium that comprises information on a given subject, say in-house sports, team-building efforts or particular meetings.

NEWSLETTERS: A newsletter is a document—in news format—bearing current reports about a club, business or organization; sometimes, the newsletter is about an individual. Newsletters are sent regularly to persons with interest in that particular club, organization or person.

BROCHURES: A fairly small or thin book, usually bound fancily and cheaply, providing promotional information about a club, business or organization, is a brochure. Unlike books, brochures are usually done in full colour and in glossy paper stocks.

STICKERS: A sticker is a piece of paper or plastic, with information on one side and a self-adhesive reverse side. As the name implies, stickers are meant to be stuck or pasted in visible, public areas, such as the windscreens or sides of vehicles or the bags of school children.

BANNERS: A banner is a long, large piece of cloth or PVC material, usually meant to convey information to a large group of persons, for instance passersby. Banners may be affixed between poles, or waved by demonstrators at a rally or parade.

ASSORTED PUBLICATIONS: A club, business or organization may wish to publish a document that is not exactly a book, not exactly a magazine, not exactly a newsletter, but a cross between two or more of these. Such a publication may carry information that is at the heart of the organization's mission, and is published under a title that captures this purpose.

WEB SITES: A web site is a page (or a collection of pages) that contains information about a person, a club, a business or organization, and which is hosted at a server so that it is available to a global audience through the world-wide web.

The Law of Diminishing Intent states that if you don’t take action soon after an idea strikes you and the emotion is high, fairly soon the urgency starts to diminish. And the longer you wait, the less likely you will ever get the job done.

Book publishing

Self-publishing is not for the weak-willed. In fact, a determined personality is imperative for success. An average book in the Kenya sells about 200 copies annually, not enough to quit a day job. This is not meant to dissuade you from a possible lucrative and rewarding occupation, but is intended, instead, to make you aware of both its positive and negative aspects, so that you can make an informed decision about pursuing this career path.

Often, the motivation behind self-publishing comes about when we either feel the urge to express ourselves about a particular topic or when we feel that a subject has not yet been handled. Perhaps we have a new angle on an old story. Or we may feel that others can learn from our unique life experience. Whatever our intent, today, there are numerous paths to self-publication. Gone are the days of the expensive vanity press. Several inexpensive options are available.

Before researching possible publication options, it is imperative to determine if there is a market for your topic. You can do this by online checking or by bookshop researching. Checking sales rank of similar books can give you an indication of popularity and sales ability. Keep in mind that the lower the rank, the higher the sales.
Once you ascertain that a market exists for your topic and after you have completed your manuscript, it's important to have it professionally edited. Another set of eyes can fact check and make sure your content is comprehensible to the lay reader. Formatting the layout is the next hurdle and can be prepared using Microsoft Word. Some prefer to use Adobe's In Design or Page Maker. QuarkXPress is also an option. The final product is almost always submitted to the publisher in PDF.

If you have a flair for design, you can use Photoshop to prepare the book cover. Book cover software is also available online and simple to use. It's important to remember that in the publishing industry a book is judged by its cover. Some basic tips of cover preparation are to keep the title visible within six feet of the viewer. Subtitles should be smaller and describe the book's content.

POD or Print-on-Demand is a fairly new concept aimed at supplying a copy to the customer upon demand. No inventory is required. Most self-publishers go to Lightning Source, which provides printing for some POD publishers who offer full service print-on-demand publishing. Most full service POD publishers help with layout, book covers, printing and marketing. If you are able to do this on your own, you may find that your markup is higher going directly to Lightning Source and opening up your own publishing company. This is quite simple to do. Once your company is registered as a business, you can go to Bowker and purchase a set of ISBN numbers for your current and upcoming titles. Lightning Source charges nominal fees to set up.

Another alternative is to purchase books from a short-run digital printing company in small quantities and then placing your book manually on internet book sites, for example, Amazon Advantage. Some magazines refuse to review POD books and so short-run publishing can be a viable route, but keep in mind the shipping costs involved. Amazon may order five copies at a time leaving you with warehousing costs.

Timing is crucial in book marketing. Prepare galleys of your book in advance of publication date by about three months and mail out to top reviewers, such as Nation Newspapers and The East African Standard, with a cover letter and a publicity release. You can write your own publicity release remembering that you are a reporter with new or pertinent information for your reader. What readers want to know in the release is, "How will this information benefit me?" Even if it is a personal story, its message has to be helpful to others.

Marketing is your biggest hurdle. Joining Kenya Publishers Association can be helpful. They offer courses intended to empower small publishers. This partnership can ensure your title will appear on bookstore shelves or may be bought by libraries.
Join internet groups for added support. An internet search will help you find online POD or self-publishing groups, which often offer advice. When you self-publish, you may not have teams of editors, designers and marketers to make the book a success. A lot of time and effort will be given to research and decision-making, but self-publishing affords the luxury of presenting your book your way.
