Mary Nanjala allegedly believed that switching off her phone would make her disappear after KSh33,000 was mistakenly sent to her via M-Pesa.

Instead of returning the money, she allegedly went off the radar and switched off her phone. But detectives reportedly had another way of finding her.

Investigators used a “soft contact” — someone who regularly communicated with Nanjala — to trace her movements. The trail eventually led detectives to her residence, where she was arrested.

Nanjala later pleaded guilty to the charges and now faces up to 14 years in prison or a fine of up to KSh5 million under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act.

Lesson: When money lands in your M-Pesa account by mistake, return it. Switching off your phone won’t make the transaction disappear.
