Why We Do What We Do at African Legends

When we started African Legends, our vision was simple: To ensure that the voices of Africans are heard, preserved, and passed down for generations.
We believe that everyone has a story and until we start telling our own stories, they will remain subject to distortion.

African stories are relatable to Africans and powerful because they carry hope.
Ndegwa Gakinya is a shining example. Not only did he rise after 40 failed business attempts, he has now become a mentor to those walking the same path. But he didn’t stop there.

For his book launch, he is bringing together people who have capital and those who have ideas so the next dreamers don’t have to go through what he did.
So, please mark Your Calendar and register for this epic event. You can also bring your teams from work.

πŸ—“Friday 26th September 2025
πŸ“ Glee Hotel, Northern Bypass, Nairobi
πŸ•• 6:00 PM

What Do You Gain by Attending?
1. Network with top minds in venture funding during the welcome coffee session
2. Discover the business models that will thrive in the AI age (and those that won’t)
3. Learn how to create wealth through intellectual property which is an emerging goldmine often overlooked in Africa
We are proud to partner with Ndegwa Gakinya on this event, and we believe more inspiring stories like his will be birthed as a result of it.

15 Lessons from Rapport: The Four Ways to Read People and Talk to Anyone in Any Situation by Emily & Laurence Alison:

1. People are complex: Recognize and adapt to individual differences in personalities and communication styles. Avoid oversimplification.

2. First impressions matter: Make a positive one by being mindful of your body language, tone of voice, and initial words.

3. The four conversation styles: Identify and adapt to four key styles – Control (Lion), Capitulate (Mouse), Confront (Tyrannosaurus Rex), and Cooperate (Monkey).

4. Mirror and match: Adjust your communication style to subtly mirror the other person's, building rapport and creating a sense of connection.

5. Ask powerful questions: Go beyond small talk to prompt deeper thinking and understanding. Encourage genuine dialogue.

6. Listen actively: Pay close attention to both verbal and nonverbal cues. Show genuine interest in what the other person has to say.

7. Validate, don't invalidate: Acknowledge and accept the other person's perspective, even if you disagree. Avoid judgment and criticism.

8. Speak with clarity and purpose: Express yourself clearly and concisely, avoiding jargon and unnecessary complexity.

9. Humor can be a powerful tool: Use humor appropriately to ease tension, build rapport, and make conversations more enjoyable.

10. Manage difficult conversations: Identify triggers, stay calm, and use empathy to navigate heated discussions or disagreements.

11. Set boundaries: Learn to say "no" effectively and gracefully when necessary. Protect your time and energy.

12. Handle manipulators: Recognize manipulative tactics and develop strategies to deflect or counter them without escalating the situation.

13. Navigate cultural differences: Be mindful of cultural norms and communication styles when interacting with people from diverse backgrounds.

14. Practice makes perfect: Continuously refine your communication skills through observation, reflection, and active practice.
