THE GARDENER IS YOUR FRIEND, THE STORY OF MY ( ) 🌱
I remember, quite vividly, the afternoon I took these cuttings. I was walking from my doctor's office when then 'plant thief' bug bit.
Beside outside the gate was a wild green border of crimson-tipped succulents, bordering the perimeter wall of the compound. Right ahead, perched on a ladder with garden sheers in hand was a uniformed groundskeeper.
"Sasa! Aki maua yenu ni smart! Inaonekana mnachubga sana," I say, noticing my voice has gone up an octave or 3.
He stops snipping and looks back, the lines on his sweaty face more pronounced in the overhead sun. He stares, then grins.
"Ehhh...tunashughulikia sana."
"Kwanza hizi za chini," I say pointing at the lush spot where I want to steal cuttings from. "....si hii ni Ile ya kudunga straight kwa mchanga?"
"Ehhh...hizi kwanza hazina siasa k**a maua zingine...."
Ondari starts explaining plant care to me as he climbs down the ladder, pointing at one plant after the other. Jackpot! He's hooked.
The Nairobi sun is out in her full glory, and I'm feeling the heat. Unfazed, he's talking his time to passionately explain how he tends to the climbers...Finally a pause in the conversation.
"Aki hizi za chini zimenivutia sana. Si inaweza mea kwa balcony kwa mkebe?" I ask, hoping to get some cuttings before I sweat through my shirt.
I know the answer is yes, but I sense that without a segway, I'll be given a full garden tour...
He gets the cue and jumps at the chance to help. Snipping a handful and passing them to me.
"Unajua hii kazi yetu, si wengi wanaulizia..." he says, picking up his sheers.
"Lakini wote wanafuraihia. Asanteni sana, Ondari. You've made my day!"
Fishing an 100 bob from my back pocket with my free hand, I flash a broad smile. I promise to follow his pointers as I walk away, thanking him again for his help.
Now...those cans I've been collecting finally have some work!
