Assembly Raises Alarm Over Collapse of Agricultural Mechanization Services

The County Assembly has raised serious concerns over the deteriorating state of agricultural mechanization services following the adoption of a report by the Committee on Agriculture, chaired by Hon. Joseph Mutunkei.

The Committee’s oversight findings paint a troubling picture of neglect, mismanagement, and loss of critical public assets meant to support farmers across the County.

Members noted with concern that the agricultural mechanization centre in Kitengela has been heavily vandalized, with operations having stalled for over five years due to lack of financial support. In a further twist, the facility has reportedly been unofficially taken over, with its offices converted into residential quarters.

The Assembly also questioned the status of key machinery owned by the County. Out of five tractors stationed at the Kajiado Demonstration Farm, two are grounded while three are operational but have been hired out under unclear circumstances. Additionally, of the three county bulldozers, two have been vandalized and one reportedly stolen, raising serious accountability concerns.

Equally alarming is the collapse of revenue streams and training functions. The Kajiado County Agricultural Training Centre has seen its revenue plummet from Ksh 702,080 in 2015 to zero in recent years, rendering it unable to execute its mandate due to lack of funding.

Members further observed that despite the County having adequate post-harvest storage facilities, these remain largely underutilized. A mobile maize dryer donated to support farmers in Kajiado South has also been left idle at the Loitoktok Cereal Board for over a decade, now considered obsolete.

Debating the Motion, Hon. Members strongly condemned the state of affairs, terming it a clear case of mismanagement of public resources and a disservice to the farming community. They called for urgent interventions to restore functionality, safeguard public assets, and ensure accountability within the Department of Agriculture.

Gubernatorial aspirant Katoo Ole Metito has boldly challenged Governor Joseph Ole Lenku to bring Senator Seki Kanar into the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to vie for the party’s gubernatorial nomination. Metito, in his recent remarks, claimed he had dared Lenku to form a new political party, but, according to Metito, the governor has not acted on that challenge.

Katoo: K**a wewe ni mwanamume, and you truly support President Ruto's re-election mlete huyo Seki wako tuingie naye uwanjani kwenye mchujo wa ugavana kwa tikiti ya UDA.

The political rivalry between Metito and Lenku has been intensifying in recent weeks. Lenku, who is now vying for the Senate seat but is yet to announce his party affiliation, recently accused Metito of making President William Ruto’s supporters to shift their allegiance to the DCP, led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Lenku claimed that more than half of Kajiado’s residents have now aligned with DCP. This accusation has sent ripples through the political landscape, with analysts suggesting that Lenku could be angling for an alliance with Gachagua’s party.

Adding to the drama, Kajiado civil servants, including Susan Simayo, have announced their intentions to run for the Women Rep seat in 2027 and have been attending opposition rallies a move that goes against civil service regulations. Despite this, Lenku has remained silent on the matter, fueling further speculation about his political alliances.

The situation grew even more charged during a recent visit by opposition leaders, including Gachagua and former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi. Gachagua used the platform to criticize President Ruto, accusing him of underperformance, and launched sharp attacks on several Members of Parliament, including George Sunkuya and Memusi . However, Gachagua refrained from commenting on Governor Lenku, sparking rumors that the governor may be preparing to back Senator Seki Kanar for the gubernatorial race.

Meanwhile, Jubilee gubernatorial aspirant Tarayia Kores has also weighed in, accusing Lenku of underperformance and questioning his leadership abilities.

As the political environment continues to shift, all eyes are now on Governor Lenku’s next move. With mounting speculation about potential alliances and endorsements, the race for Kajiado’s governorship is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched battles in the upcoming elections.
