Mandera county leaders failed their duty

Subject

To: H.E. The Governor of Mandera County

Subject: Report on Access to Maternity and Medical Services at Mandera Referral Hospital

Your Excellency,

We respectfully submit this report to bring to your attention concerns raised by residents regarding access to medical services at Mandera Referral Hospital.

Several residents have reported that patients, including expectant mothers who come to the hospital for delivery services, are required to pay a fee of approximately KES 10,000 before receiving care. In cases where patients are unable to make this payment, they are allegedly denied services. This situation has caused great concern among the community, particularly given the ongoing drought and the severe economic hardship facing many families.

The drought has significantly affected livelihoods, leaving many residents unable to meet basic needs, including medical expenses. Pregnant women and other vulnerable patients are especially at risk, as delays or denial of medical care can lead to serious health complications and loss of life.

In light of these challenges, we humbly request your intervention. We kindly appeal for consideration to allow residents and patients with medical debts to access services and be granted the opportunity to settle their bills at a later time, when conditions improve and when the Almighty Allah grants rain.

Your support and leadership in this matter will greatly alleviate the suffering of the people of Mandera County and help ensure that essential healthcare services remain accessible to all, especially the most vulnerable members of our community.

We thank you for your continued commitment to the welfare of Mandera residents and look forward to your positive response.

Statement on Development Challenges in Northern Kenya

By voice of NFD

As residents of northern Kenya, we continue to face significant challenges in development compared to other parts of the country. For example, the distance from Garissa to Mandera is less than 700 kilometres, yet it can take over 24 hours to travel due to poor road infrastructure.

In addition, our region still suffers from limited access to electricity, unreliable communication networks, and underdeveloped public services. Despite these hardships, residents and businesses in northern Kenya pay the same and sometimes even higher taxes and revenue contributions as those in more developed counties.

We therefore call upon the national and county governments, as well as development partners, to prioritize infrastructure investment, improve connectivity, and ensure equitable distribution of resources. The people of northern Kenya deserve the same opportunities for growth and development as every other Kenyan.
